A Hawk tried attacking my pug 2 days ago

You may have gotten cleared to kill it but possession and eating one... I'm not so sure... It's illegal just to keep the feathers or nest material of many birds. To have a carcass in your fridge is probably not legal no matter what.

The risk of eating it shouldn't be any worse than the risk of eating any gamebird. You have the same risk with quail or pheasant and probably more risk with rabbit. You just have to cook it good. I'd probably just follow any recipe for wild gamebirds. I'm sure there's tons online. I'm going to be looking for some when I butcher my quail.

If you had not gotten him first he would have come back again for your dog and I don't blame you at all for protecting your own. How absolutely awful when that is against the law.
Hawks certainly don't seemed to be in short supply around where I live and they are unbelievebly bold, (not to mention insatiable), as well. Seem not to want at all to bother my pair of African brown geese though.

your local Wildlife officer may have been ok with it cause your state laws may be more lienent but Federal law exclusively prohibits killing raptors! If they are killing livestock they have to come out and remove the animal themselves unless its an attack on humans. Pets dont count either unfortunetly. You should see the heck we have here in AZ with the Mexican grey wolves.I would keep this story to yourself to keep out of a hassle
