A Hen That Crows - or Misidentified Gender

I was happy that I could tell he was a roo, too, as I kept imagining pointy feathers on my girls who have really red combs. But your boy has pointy saddle and hackle feathers. (I'm learning! Yay for me, sad for you)

Sorry, he crows because he is a boy! I know that is not what you wanted to hear. You can identify the pointy saddle feathers now and with the crow, well, nuff said. Are you not allowed to have roosters? He is beautiful!

Oh, it's not a big loss on my end at all. I'm fine with him being a roo and I'll definitely be keeping it. It's amusing more than anything!

I've heard that typical male development can be suppressed in cockerels when there is already a dominant rooster present. Then they develop rather quickly if the dominant rooster is removed.

That sounds likely to be what happened here. The other rooster was a bantam but showy as all get-out and Purple here just wandered around doing hen things. :)

I have one I thought was a pullet, too. Then one day I reached down to pet him as I walked along (several chickens were following along with me). He took a bite out of my hand and held on. Instinctively I shook him off then took a closer look. ”Oh! You’re a boy!” I was so surprised it was funny. Even now, a month later, I have to look close. There are six cockerels out there that I know of—apparently five are enough of them to slow him down, poor little guy.
