Howdy,

I have a Buff Brahma hen that has a large, soft crop. It dangles when she walks and she gets over heated this summer. Here is some info about her. Any info is handy! I am not over worried about her, but I would like to prevent anything from starting. The only worry is Sour Crop.

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
She is a Buff Brahma chicken, hen, she is about...Hm...12 pounds. (She is the biggest hen I have, bigger than my Delaware rooster). Still heavy as ever.

2) What is the behavior, exactly.
She is acting perfectly fine, I give her fresh water, etc. With a bit of Apple cider vinegar (with the mother) due to my concern. The only difference in behavior is she gets hotter than any of the others, (I know she is big) but a little over heated.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? About her whole life, once she started laying I would say. I am not quite sure, I thought she was just a heavy bird.

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? Nope, not at all. Perfectly fine flock mates. No acting weird, she is still laying like the others.

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. Not really, her crop is very large and a bit too soft. I am worried she has sour crop. No blood though.

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. Not enough vitamins or grit I would guess? Am I correct.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. Drinking fine, eats fine... Blue seal crumble and scraps from pasta.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. I can't tell, maybe a bit runny. That is all I can tell.

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Vinegar in water, tablespoon or less per gallon. Plus I just started that and massaging her crop.

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? It isn't really that big of a deal. She is acting fine, I am just cautious. She is my baby.

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. Here is her, the best body shot of her I got.

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use I am really hoping to clean her coop, it is a bit messy, food on the ground which I hope to clean neatly. But I would think of the food as if it were grit, right?

On the side, she sand bathes and walks fine. Just with a droopy crop. Thank you kindly!

Sincerely,

I have an older hen that has a pendulous crop and it's only when she really starts to overeat that she starts high stepping. I tried a crop bra but it seems to stress her out and makes it hard for her to move so I don't use it. She is a very happy hen and has outlived 11 or her sisters many of them younger. She has never had sour crop and always has a big appetite. When she sees food she comes a running. So basically what I'm saying is with my hen as long as she is happy I just leave her be and she is very happy. The neck thing she does is just adjusting the crop.

When it was really warm here in the Chicago she ate much less and the crop was much smaller. But she always goes back to bingeing.

Hello,

Thank you so much, I feel more comfortable knowing that now!
She is such a cutie, and I am glad she is happy the way she is!

I actually think that is exactly what my hen does,
(except for high steps). But I think it is the same issue.

Thank you once again,
have a wonderful summer!

Sincerely,
The Angry Hen
