A Heritage of Perfection: Standard-bred Large Fowl

At what age should I be able to recognize wing defects and know that it won't change with maturity?

I assessed my first hatch of Delawares. They are 14 weeks old. 12 out of 15 look like they have some sort of wing defect, either split wing or missing feathers or slipped wing.

I do see wing feathers that are just starting to grow in, so I'm hoping that the wing plumage will fill in as they mature.

I wasn't sure whether to cull any, at this point, because of the way that the wings look?

Is this a place to discuss color genetics? I have recently had a batch of chicks hatch out of a Cubalaya pair, that has me baffled.

Kim, in my NHs the wings can look off until they are coming into their own. Since your Delaware has the NH in them, it does not surprise me. It is mostly the cockerels that I see this in.

I do not know about your birds, but the birds here would be tightened up in another month. Give them another 4-6 wks., and see how they look.

Karen, his posts and posts like that are the reason serious breeders no longer post on BYC. I will continue to post here, as know it all teenies don't bother me much. Their posts take care of it. As anyone who can read will see that I posted an observation based on what I have seen/heard over 50 years. Just an observation. Maybe he can give some information that supports that people are indeed having problems hatching this year. No one I know is having problems, but then the people I know are very good at hatching. I'm not and I'm not having any problems either.

The thing I did stupid was I put plastic bag under the nest for something new then added the bedding to add support to the bedding not to fall or become loose but sadly don't do that cause eggs will cook with little air circulation.. Ummm, your from Cali, climate is always the same, east coast it's different..
