Dig up a photo (or print) of a properly colored NH and Rhode Island Red wing. Use it as a guide, but add irregular marking instead of solid with more black than not. You can still evaluate the wing for too much or not enough black. Where it is, in my opinion, matters to.
It is all about balance. I do not think it is any easier that the writers of the color standard did not get a few points correct. That is my opinion only. It is my opinion that if there had been a faithful and consistent following, a few points would have been revised. Maybe not. and maybe some would have chose to double mate.
A project like this, concerning preserving (or improving) color, while improving type would seam to be a series of small victories.
I do not think it is an easy color, but I do not believe when established would be of the most difficult colors.
