A house for a duck

I don't know if she flew. I think she maybe was just hiding in our yard somewhere. We have a very big yard. The good news is that when she came out of hiding, she was hanging out with our first duck "Ping", at the shed door where the food is and next to where they sleep. So seems like maybe things are going to be OK. I'll keep you guys posted.

We keep hens and ducks together, we actually made a separate duck house but the ducks prefer the coop

Go figure. The hens go up into the hen house at night and the ducks sleep underneath so everyone kind of does their own thing. We keep a kiddie pool in the back yard for the ducks to play in and a few buckets of water throughout the yard (we have goats too so it's kind of weird). And everyone free ranges throughout the day.

I imagine that if we kept everyone in the coop 24X7, that would be a mess but for sleepy time, they make it work.

I have a pekin drake, 2 drakes that are pekin x cayuga crosses and a female mallard. BIG size differences between them! So far we haven't had any mating problems, all three drakes have tried to woo my little mallard but she is one of my original flocks (survived a dog attack and 2 flock introductions) so she is like this little duck with big attitude and the boys were put in their place. Come to think of it, I have a flock of strong female hens too and the boys are scared of them.

I think the forums are super helpful but I always take it with a grain of salt. What works for one person may not work for us and vice versa. You will figure it out along the way. Good luck!

Lol, our Mallard whom I call "Ducky" (never could find the right name for her) went MIA for a few weeks, turns out she had been nesting under an old wheelbarrow for over a week before we found her. She is a strong little thing that's for sure!

Ducks are so weird!
