A "I have mites" thread.....Again...

Did you get rid of them the first time? If so, did you treat your coop at the same time? Also wild birds like sparrows can be infested and if they can get into your coop or run they can pass them to the chickens. We use lots of sevin dust here.

I really thought I had gotten rid of them but I guess not.

We get barn swallows in our barn every summer and those suckers are crawling with lice. Last summer a baby fell out of it's nest so I picked it up and it took me about 5 mins to get it back in the nest, afterwards I discovered my whole arm was covered with lice. I got the baby back out and Sevin dusted it as well as my arm, and then took an exceptionally long hot shower.

Sevin or poultry dust work great, do your birds and coop and then repeat in about 10 days to get any freshly hatched ones.

Copied these from another thread, I've used both and they worked very well. As for DE, my experience has been that it does nothing for a mite or lice problem.

I know people say this a lot but "I have mites!!!!"

My questions:

1. How can I get rid of them a naturally. (I've tried D.E and it was a no-go)

2. How could they get mites in the first place

3. How can I prevent mites in the future?

I have 7 black Australorps hens and no rooster. I use plastic nesting boxes and straw bedding in coop and nesting boxes. My girls are losing feathers and not laying. I don't have any perches because my chickens don't roost at night. If you could give me advice to get them to roost that would be awesome.

All synthesis comes from nature. Pyrethrines are about as natural as you can get, but in some areas people report resistance to it by Northern Fowl mites. Mites can live in dirt, on wild birds, and in straw, under roosts, in cracks and crevices. Ditch the straw and go with pine shavings. Pine shavings are more absorbent and cushion the floor and nests quite well. In order to prevent mites, you must use a residual spray such as an emulsified concentrate. Permectrin II, Atroban 11% EC, Ravap EC are a few which are labeled for use on poultry and premises. Dusting with Permethrin or DE is a waste of time in my experience. If you aren't thorough, some survive, reproduce and become a problem again. That is why you have to dust again in 7-10 days to get any mite/louse eggs that hatch. My way takes a few spritzes one time. If one treats birds, but doesn't properly clean out the house and treat the premises correctly, the mite population rises again. It has been years since I had to treat a bird for mites. That is because I use a premise spray which carries a residual.

Concentrated topical treatments labeled for dogs can be a problem. I have seen dogs become quite irritated with some of them such as Frontline, Advantage, etc. The only long residual topical I saw work very efficiently was Frontline Spray, which contains Fipronil. Very conservative amounts were used by applying with a q-tip or small spritz on specific locations of the bird's body. I would avoid highly concentrated topical drops from a tube like those mentioned. There are numerous compounds in certain emulsified concentrates which are labeled safe for poultry that are very effective, in addition to being used as a premise spray.
