Kira has a lot of time to work off her energy. We live on a little ranchette of 100 acres. Our yard is aproximately 2 acres itself. We throw the ball for her and work with her constantly. She has amazing bloodlines too. She's 100% German GSD. 3/4 West German and 1/4 East German. I didn't realize it made such a difference in their behaviors. From what I have read, the American GSDs are a lot more hyper and tend to not be as intelligent than the German bloodlines. They were bred for looks more than anything. I plan to get a male from similar bloodlines in about 6 months. I want to have puppies! I want Kira to be older though so she will go through at least one cycle before the male is old enough to breed. They will be raised around lots of animals, kids, and other people. At first I was worried about one since they have a bit of a bad reputation, but it's all in how you raise them. I know I am in love with her. She already has that trotting walk that is so adorable to watch, and her ears are almost standing up now!

Sorry for rambling. I'm just really proud of her!

BTW, have you tried using saddles on your hens to keep the roos from tearing up their backs?? Just a thought.

Yes, they all wear saddles now. Haven't had to sew up one since.

You should see/hear the remarks visitors have when they first see them. Several people have asked "Is that their feathers" meaning the brightly colored and printed fabric on their back. "Why yes, she naturally has pictures of chickens on her back."

Hey Lady didn't get time to post much before but wanted to share a few things. If the girl pup don't go poop soon ya might want to give her a little bit of karo syrup. Dark will work best but light will work as well. Not too much or she will be too loose. This works for babies as well.

Next for anyone planning on raising pups I recommend a site called Las Vegas Whelp, you can google it. This woman has really put out the info on breeding and raising pups and it is well worth a look even if you never plan on having pups. Planned litter or not this site will help you.


I use to breed and raise black/blue great danes. Now I just socialize pups for other breeders. Right now I have 3 sheltie pups, 2 pomchi pups and I just got 4 chihuahua pups yesterday, man nothing like puppy breath.

About the best advice I can give on pups is start how you mean to go on. It might be cute to see a pup do something but picture an adult dog doing it. If they can't do it as an adult don't let them get away with it because they are a puppy.

As far as the girly pup- get some plain canned pumpkin and give her a couple of tbsp 2 times a day-it works both ways~diarrhea and constipation!

Zookeeper, thanks for the site info. We already practice the start good habits early. I definitely understand my pup is going to get huge. She's not allowed in bed, or on furniture. She'd hog our loveseat when she gets bigger! She's already trained to sleep in her own bed. I don't allow her to jump up on us or anybody. One of the hardest habits to break, in my oppinion. This web site is good for everything! So glad I found it!

Very good advice Jean - especially with big dogs - you have to be the leader and you have to start training early and just like with kids, it's best if you don't start bad habits that you can't break later. I think it's so cool you socialize pups - all that cuddling and puppy breath.

HOWEVER, I did let the two pups watch a movie with us tonight. It's probably the only time I've watched a movie in months but I hurt my back putting in the new garden and laying on the sofa was about all I could muster tonight and I felt like cuddling my two little bears. The little boy wouldn't stay on the sofa, he got too hot right away and started panting and wanted down but the little girl sat there and really watched the movie - she never took her eyes off the screan. She got too hot too after a bit and got down and laid on floor next to her brother. They looked like two bear rugs. She did go poop earlier today and has been pooping ever since. I went ahead and gave them each a dose of Panacure because it will be Tuesday before the vet is back in town and the "breeder" said he has not given them anything for worms or puppy shots yet and they are "six, maybe seven, weeks old". They were outside in a dirty shed and he said his dogs always have worms because they eat the goat poop and he doesn't bother with worming them, he just takes them to the vet to be dewormed. I was getting a little worried that the little girl especially seemed somewhat lethargic and hadn't pooped so I gave them the medicine and they have been acting just like puppies ever since. Around here, we buy a large bottle of Panacure from the vet and keep it in the fridge because with all the dogs, cats, goats, etc. someone is always needing a dose. Actually, I have about the best vet pharmacy/medicine cabinet around since I tend to so many animals these days.

Tomorrow we go back to Covington to move some of our large furniture that we just moved off and left a year ago when we came here with just some clothes in a suitcase - prior owners originally left their furniture here and just handed over the keys. Over the last year and few months we've slowly moved a few pieces of furniture here and there but only the really necessary things like beds, but not the armoires, dishes but not the wall decorations, some clothes but not the whole closet. I'm figuring if I haven't needed it by now, it's not that important but we do need to get that house cleaned out and leased. The market is so bad right now I'm not going to attempt to sell it.

Well, it's time to take the puppies out for one last walk before bedtime.

I meant to post that we have named the puppies Atticus Finch (Addy) and Scout. We had both grown tired of the GWTW names and Mammy and Big Sam were about all that was left. I guess if any more strays show up we'll have to come up with yet another novel.

I just read all 46 pages of the thread in the past few hours and I think it's amazing.
I stumbled on it by doing a yahoo search on how large i need to make my coop. This really was a gem to find. Everything you've shared has already taught me much.
How are things on the farm? I see it's been about a month from your last update. How's everything going this spring?
