Wow, a lot has happened for you this past month. first of all, you have a wonderful home. Those walls are amazing, I can't believe they would cover them up.
Your peafowl are looking great! I had a peacock and hen when I was a child. His tailfeaters were longer than I was tall and he was beautiful. Yours looks well on his way to becoming a wonderful bird. ^.^ And the puppies are so big and chubby now. It's great to hear that the dogs are leaving the birds alone now.

Ruth, thanks for posting your "different way" journal. A week ago today, I received my 84 chicks and 4 turkeys. Way too many for a newbie but it's done. I've lost 8 chicks since their arrival (4 of those in the last 24 hours) and my gut has been telling me that I should put them outside instead of in my kitchen (not one of my better ideas, lesson learned).

I live in SC so the weather is really nice these days. Today is windy and the high is 71. Starting tomorrow, we are expecting highs in the mid 80's for the next 10 days so out they go.

Thanks for giving me the courage to do this. Reading your post has made me feel some relieve knowing that it will work.

Off to get an outside (night time) brooders set up.

I just turned loose a couple of dozen three week olds (some Frizzles and some Buff Orps I bought). It's now nice and warm here and they are loving their freedom. I have a couple of dozen others (two weeks old) that will be turned out today or tomorrow. It's just too hot and stuffy for them to stay in their Chick-n-Hutch with heat lamps on while inside the coop and then have to watch everyone else run around and have fun and dust bathe.

Only reason they have been getting the more protective treatment is they are my B/B/S Orps from Miss Prissy and my B/B/S Ameraucanas from DipsyDoodle and my BC Marans from my own flock but in my experience I've found that if I keep them in a brooder, even a raised wire floor brooder like the Chick-n-Hutch, they get Cocci at around 4 weeks so I turn them out before then and have never had a free ranging chick get sick or injured by any of the 200+ adult chickens, ducks or peacocks. Those little ones are fast and learn quick to stay out of the way.

I just got done reading all 49 pages wow what a story! I couldnt help but look after seeing the Pyrs stated. Anywhos I just found this site a few days ago and am already hooked! I bet your loving your pyrs and they are amazing dogs I have three right now and my mom who got her first one in the 70's has six. What amazing walls also!! Anywhos thanks for the great journey.

Ruth you are correct they are great. I have one who from the time he was 6 weeks would go out and feed with me then moved out with the herd at 9 weeks full time he loves his critters so much even if the gates are open he will not leave. Wow! Your house is beautiful! I grew up in MS and now that I moved away I miss seeing the beautiful plantation homes. I have really enjoyed reading about your life on your farm. I like how you don't sugar-coat anything and it's all real. You have such a great live and let live attitude. Also, Rex and Scarlett are a dream. I can only hope my GSD has a turn around and loves to live with chickens instead of eat them...LOL. She is still young though so fingers crossed. Thanks for taking the time to share with us. Well today is my 50th birthday and a day of reflection. What have I done in my 50 years on this planet? I don't have time to cover the whole 50 years but I do know what I've been doing for the last 15 months - getting this farm up and running so that I can start my next 50 years living on a farm, raising my own livestock, growing my own fruits and vegetables, fishing my own pond, and providing a sanctuary where friends and family can come and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Today I took lots of pics of my garden. I'll pick the heads of lettuce and my first red tomato today. I've already been picking the radishes, mesclun greens mix, and green zebra tomatoes and squash.

I've met many on-line friends and some real-life friends here on BYC. A wonderful hello to Miriam "Bayouchica" who I was forutnate enough to meet.

I feel blessed in so many ways and I thank you all for your wonderful encouragement over this journey. There have been times I wanted to throw in the towel and many times I've told God he picked the wrong person, that I'm just not up for this work load, but, of course, He knows what he's doing and there's a plan and a purpose and to everything there is a season.

There have been times of laughter and times of tears and lots of times of sweat and dust and dirt but I wouldn't trade this journey for anything.

Thank you all for sharing it with me.

Here in the mtns, we were just able to plant our garden a couple weeks ago. Thanks for the great pictures!! Your garden gate reminds me of ours that we just built, see?
