A little freaked out - Found a cockroach outside our house!!!

I believe that roaches can live one month without food and their head, and one week without water. They are almost impossible to get rid of, because they multiply like crazy. I hate the things.

I'm sorry, but NIFTY POSTED IN THE WRONG FORUM!!! I'm sorry, I couldn't resist! Good to know you're human.

The bait traps actually do work pretty good. A friend's house in Florida was literally infested with the nasty things. The bait traps that were supposed to last for 12 months lasted about 2, and never did get rid of them completely, but they did greatly decrease the numbers. A few (dozen) more traps would have probably wiped them out.

As also stated, the borax is supposed to be good for them as well. There is also some barrier sprays/powders/crystals that you can get to put around the outside of your house.

Here's a site that has several different 'recipes' for killing these nasty bugs

I have no idea if the area where you are at, but if you have a TSC-Tractor Supply Store, you can purchase some Demon WP. This is the best of all bug spray we have ever used. It is about $15 a packet and has 3 small packets inside. You drop one packet inside 1 gallon of water in a sprayer. Spray and watch the roaches continue to die like crazy. We sprayed our house about 6 months ago and they are still dead or dying. This stuff will also kill scorpions. Might give it a try.

We use this stuff inside our home on the baseboards and crevices. The only drawback to using Demon WP, it will make your floors look like you spilt watered down milk. Just don't mop your floors for about 2 weeks. It will come up off your floors. I vacuum and mop my floors before spraying and wait 2 weeks before mopping. Works like a charm!

Good luck on your war with roaches.

Are you sure it was a German cockroach (small, very fast, light brown) and not what we call a "water bug" around here (large, dark brown, shiny, like to sit verically on stucco walls, not very fast at all)?

If you can decipher that sentence, more power to ya.

The large "water-bug" cockroaches rarely infest the interior of houses and they appear seasonally in California. The little fast brown ones are a different matter...

I suspect all the Gulf Coast folks find this amusing! Freaked out at ONE roach OUTSIDE of the house? When I lived in New Orleans, there was a psychiatrist who specialized in desensitizing people that had an emotional response to roaches. You would hate to hear what the "roach exposure" rate was by the end of successful treatment.

I had a cousin in north Louisiana who was afraid of roaches. Her approach was to reach in a room and turn on the lights, give the roaches time to hide, and then enter!

It would be a serious handicap here if you had a response other than stepping on them or otherwise killing them when you see them in the house! Outside - totally fruitless endeavor without destroying the natural environment!

going organic, '
Boraic acid powder around the base of the foundation along interior walls window sill and door ways.

Borax washing soap also works.
works on fleas, mites and any other soft/semi soft shelled insect.
I know it works on Roaches,
dont tell Cassi but she liberally sprinkled Borax washing powder to kill fleas in the living room and it got in with her Hissing Roaches,
yep poor things gone but not forgotten.

Be very careful with roach poisons. If one eats it and takes a little stroll and dies where a chicken can eat it it may kill the chicken. i would get roach traps where they go in for the food and never come out.

Make sure your coop isn't infested. Check it at night with a flash light. Keep all the chicken food tightly covered in a plastic container.
