Hi iron, I was told by my Vet not to use shavings for my chicks, use straw. I cannot remember why, but something about them getting sick. I always use straw for my babies, not sure what anyone else will say.
Also you are starting out fine with your coop and nothing wrong with that, just add as you go along.\\
If you come across a piece of clear plastic, or even the plastic they use for carports, you can add a skylight to let the sun in on the chickens. Not teasing you, my coop does have a skylight.
Thanks countrybum. I think it is a no win situation I read on here not to use straw since bugs etc can live there which makes sense to me.
As for my coop. The south side has 2 areas that are open and covered with clear plastic sheeting for now but I plan to make some "windows" so I can open them in summer for ventilation and close in winter but still get light. But now you got me thinking. I know where there will be a lot of clear lexan soon. It was put on my neighbors arena about a year ago and the installer put the screws too tight so it will all be replaced and tossed. Of course I will be standing at the eves with arms out. YES henny penny will have a skylight. Thanks fer the idea.
Rob
I love it. My coop that is still under construction is made about 75% of recycled items. I think it is the smartest way to go when you got the stuff around anyway.
Yes byrdluv that is tin like most of us have for roof on our barns and chicken coops. That is all a part of my salvage. My neighbor had to have her arena roof replaced and me being the nice guy that I am (yeah right) offered to properly dispose of it for her all 7200 square feet. I dug a trench about 10" deep around the run then laid the chicken wire in the trench and out about a foot then FORCED the tin down and secured it with screws and backfilled the trench. The tin is 2' wide I figured that burying it will help if I have any diggers and the upper part makes the ladies harder to be seen while they are strutting around. Also by the tin sticking up it will keep the ladies from getting the peas I planted on the east side and the beans I plan to put on the south. Those will both be allowed to climb the side of the run and I "think" I will be able ot pick from inside and out side.
