Yes. Cedar is toxic to birds, especially chicks. And it gets more so when wet.

So you mention this one chick smells of it, but you haven't said that the other one does, too..? If it's pine and you're changing it twice a day then I'm thinking any ammonia isn't going to be a problem with their respiratory systems.

Thats what I thought. The other one smells the same too. I just think they smell because...
1. They sit in their own poop.
2. They climb all over each other.
3. They are chicks.
So, anyways, I think that they just smell because of those 3 reasons. The smell is not strong either. Its actually going away now..

Yup, they do stink. I raised my first 6 chicks in my living room. Second set was in the shed. Third set is under a broody hen now.
