A long vent... I don't want to do this anymore...

I much prefer the fatal +, I did the vinegar and baking soda last night. My husband went to home depot, so I had him stop at the hospital and pick up a few mls to keep on hand. Vet stuff is too ingrained in me, I am a bit to queasy with the breaking necks, chopping necks stuff for the bigger ones.... Quick cardiac stick and they are done....

A lesson learned, hate that it was a hard one...

Hi, Jenn, I appreciate your sharing your experience. And I can sympathize. I am a Registered Nurse, not working due to medical reasons, but I still think I should be able to help out everything.

Yup. Hard to resist.

I'm a gimp, a cardiac stick in something as small as a chick and I'd probably stick the palm of my hand instead. And boy wouldn't THAT be dumb.

Well I think it is done...

Started out with about 50 eggs, day 18 had 27 fully developed. Out of the other 23 mostly infertile, a few blood rings....

Lost 11 to my stupidity, about 5 of those I think I directly killed with way to much assisting

.....

Well what should I incubate next... Hummmm maybe a FEW from my own hens to practice my new learned skills with... JENNIFER DON'T TOUCH THE EGGS!!!!

Jenn of AnniesEggFarm;

I too had to learn the hard way. It was amazing when I set the eggs in the bator with a turner and never opened it until hatch day. I started getting 95% + hatches.

Somewhere I heard that too high of humidity could cause unabsorbed yokes. I'd have to research that. Good luck on your next hatch.

here's a thread around here somewhere - it's basic carbon monoxide/dioxide (no sleep all confuddled) overdose. They go to sleep and die. I've found it useful with the little ones. Older chickens I can handle a lot more easily the old ways.

I put the chick in a shallow container, pour baking soda in the base of a larger - air tight container, rest the chick and shallow container on one side and add vinegar and seal. Takes little time, if the chick can't see out - I use a bit of black linen to line the shallow container. They generally go out quickly with little struggle or fuss - pretty much like gassing one down.

Do you have a can of spray duster for your keyboard? Place chick in a very, very small plastic bag--the kind with the zipper--and seal. Open the zip just enough to insert the plastic spray tube from the can of duster. Give it a good, strong spray and quickly zip shut. The chick will take one or two breaths and expire. No time to be hurt or frightened or even struggle. It seems to be the quickest method I've found so far. From the outside, it seems painless and humane, but never having undergone it myself, I can only say it seems that way.
