I went out to feed my 3 quail about 2 weeks ago and to my suprise I only had 2 quail with no sign of the 3rd quail. I did have 2 female and 1 male but was unable to tell which was which. I really need to know now what I have. Is there a way to tell? They all looked the same to me anyway. Also, can one quail lay 2 eggs a day? And how long can a female quail produce fertile eggs without a male?

with coturnix if they are mature you can gentle squeeze near the rear of the quailowards the cloaca and males are normally swollen and you get a sort of foam come out females you get nothing

You can go by watching them...if the male is mounting the female then there ya have it

Also males make a crowing sound. They grunt too

If they're mature, you can watch them for a while and figure it out. This is how we sex all our white quail--it really doesn't take but a few minutes of attention. It's easiest if you mix things up for them a bit--a new female in the pen will get them riled up and behaving in obvious gender-specific ways, but in your case try separating them for a few hours, then put them back together and watch what happens.

Male: Will mount the female, will crow loudly.
Female: Will do neither.

Also, over time, if you have two eggs a day then you probably have two females. One female can lay two eggs in a single day, but she won't do it every day.

Good luck. I'm sorry about your missing quail. Hope you've ended up with one of each!

Wait a minute ! The males have the foam ? Can females have foam too ??

I'm pist !!!! I had 2 quail and got 2 eggs usualy a day but one has foam. I assumed they were both females and just been tossing the eggs for 3 months .

This whole time I could have been hatching ??Ahhhhh

The females will sometimes have a little foam, too. It's not as much or as voluminous as a male's foam, but it can show up.

Alas--I'm sorry--you probably really can't hatch those eggs. But there is one way to know for sure and it's pretty cheap to try..... just toss a few in your incubator and see what happens in 18 days!
