I'm curious. For those of you who have said that you have seen pigs kill animals. Were those pigs fed meat in with their food?
I'm just trying to figure out why some pigs are killers and others aren't.

i have given my pot belly very limited meat(actually the meat he has had was chicken!..lol)...i really think it has to do with being more tame...and being properly fed..i dont mean..quanity..i mean quality..as in..feed that has everything they need in it....and again...being a more tame pig...as in..they know who is head pig(you)..and they wont feel the need to attack things..and show dominance...etc..just my theory...probably wrong..but my guy hasnt attacked any..and he definatly would have if he was gonna..(knocking on wood)..lol..but they are still pigs..and a bit wild always..so..i dont have him and them in the yard un-supervised..just in case...wendy

It has nothing to do with weither they have been feed meat, it is if they are able to get the taste of blood. They are such a curious animal and unfortunately they can only test things with thier mouth. At my FILs they raise market hogs. There will always be a hog or 2 that for what ever reason gets hurt or dies unexpectedly. If this happens while my FIL is at work the other hogs in the pen will start picking at the downed hog. Once there is a cut or deep scratch they can smell the blood and then they start tasting. Before you know it they will have started eating it. There are also the ones that just for some reason start out over curious and then as they grow almost in a sense turn mean. My hubby has done chores and had a couple work together to try and knock him down. This is very dangerous when you have a 280 hog hitting you in the legs. 95% of the time they run the other direction but there are the few times when they dont. These are also farm hogs, not some little piglet that was a runt and raised with the kids. There are many wonderfully friendly hogs and pigs and piglets out there, you just have to watch what is going on when you are raising for butcher. Jenn

I am raising two female pigs for the freezer myself and like you, feed right over their fencing so I don't have to enter their pen. My chooks always run to pick up a treat like yours. Well, three of them got inside the pig pen. Two finally flew out but one is still in there and I cannot reach it. The first day the pigs chased it but it was not malicious but wanting to play............probably the way my very large outside dog wants to "play" with the poultry! But the silly chicken is still in there and thriving ..........so far. I put a board over the 3 ft. high section where I drop the feed but the pigs think that is a toy too. I am sure they would kill it if they really take to chasing it. I just hope it has sense to fly out soon.

I have never given meat to the pigs. Thier feed is hog grower..and they get LOTS of veggie scraps...and now that I am in the canning mode...lots of canning scraps. Pigs are just that...PIGS. The first pig we raised was a sweetheart. He was in there alone, so no compitition for feed. He grew fast..and was gentle. He would never have eaten a chicken...they would go in there alot...to " clean up" These 2 females..well...they are dangerous. I had to get in there to spray them for lice...and as soon as I entered the pen, the larger one ran to me, and BIT ME on the knee. Oh, she got a good swat with a piece of 1x3 I was carrying, just for that reason. All I can say..is be carefull....they grow fast...and can get mean!!

now this post has made me wonder. Old farmers fix, my grandfather would give the sows pickle juice if they were trying to eat their young. He said they did that when they were missing something in their diet. Wonder if that has anything to do with all this.
