She is a Barred Rock, and it was one of her standard-sized nice brown eggs. I think they are pretty heavy to hold in your hand. She acted like she didn't even know it was still attached, was just gleefully chowing down on her laying mash, and she had to walk quite a ways from the place she laid the egg to the feeding bowl. So it had to have been fairly well attached to her. It didn't seem to have pulled out any feathers or caused her any discomfort/distress. It just fell off when she turned around, plop, and didn't break. These weird-o situations seem to happen to me only. Someone gets their jollies out of terrifying me, I sometimes believe, with these odd happenings. A jester in Heaven, perhaps, who has too much time on his hands?
The last 2 days her eggs have been laid just fine, no problem, normal as usual.
Today it was the little Sebright Bantam who scared me. She stayed in her nesting box way too long, in my opinion. I thought she was eggbound, although her eyes were bright and she didn't appear in distress or discomfort. I reached in and she pecked me gently. I had thought maybe she was broody.
But she got up about an hour later, when the other hens began to nag her for the nesting spot (they hadn't laid their eggs yet and were mad she was hogging it), and played and took a dust bath. I just looked in, and all 4 girls laid eggs today.
So I guess everything is okay.
