A newbie with questions

Hi. My name is Henry and my human's names are Jacie and Ty.
They built a home with a nice coop and run and had no one in it.

They planned on filling it next spring but while at the feed store they found me up for adoption. It was love at first sight for Jacie and I and Ty knew it was a lost cause so home I came. That was about 3 months ago.
As you can tell I am a young white leghorn rooster. I am very very gentle and loved to have attention. Especially my comb rubbed each night before I go to bed
They decided that I needed a family so Ty came home with 5 cochin chicks. A blue, a silver tip, 2 buff and 1 black (hopefully)

They are isolated right now in the trough with the ultra light but also have a portable fence to get out in the yard.

Now to the questions that my human Jacie has for you.

#1. When can I be allowed to have contact with the chicks and do you think I will try to hurt them (I don't think so!)
#2. If their medicated starter mash is put out with all of us will it hurt if I eat it and will it hurt if they get into my food?

My human will probably have more questions later and she and I are both so glad we found this site!!

I do not feed my chicks (or any of my animals) medicated feed. I feel they are better served building up a healthy immune system the natural way. Starter/grower crumbles is okay for everybody in general.

Your cockeral is 12+ weeks old? The baby chicks need to be a lot bigger before I would turn them out together. As they grow and come closer to the same size you can think about turning them out together. Just remember your cockeral is a lot more mature than the pullet chicks. As he is sexually maturing he can very easily hurt your pullets until they are big enough to fend for themselves in the coop. He will mount them when the urge hits him. Being smaller than he is he can leave some damage with his feet, when his spurs grow in and by pulling feathers from their head and back, etc. Are you familiar with the term "randy as a billy goat"? It applies to cockerals, too.

Hi Henry!

I'm a relative newbie myself, so I know your human will get better answers from other, more experienced humans, but I HAD to write to tell you that your post put a big smile on my face! I'm glad that you and your human(s) found each other and I look forward to more of your posts about life with your sisters in your fab coop. The five baby sisters at my house are even younger than your sisters (they just got here yesterday), but they're old enough to know that you all have a wonderful looking setup over there!

There are different schools of thought on the medicated vs. non- medicated starter. In the end, it is just a matter of personal choice. You can find many threads on the subject if you are interested by searching the forums for 'medicated feed' or something similar. However, you can rest easy about the birds sharing food. Medicated starter will not hurt Henry, nor will it hurt your girls if they eat Henry's food, assuming the majority of their diet is their starter.

Hi Drafthorse. thanks for the compliments. Unfortunately we lost little Lela this past weekend. With help from members in this group and a lot of investigation I think we have figured out that she was smothered. I think we have everything fixed now so that it will not happen again. the other 4 seem fine. (knock on wood)
