Hello folks, I live in Killen Alabama. Myself and the wife have decided we want some backyard chickens, our coop is 90% complete and I have been researching breeds on the internet, I think I like the Black Star, how would i go about getting some?
what else do I need? Feeders? I am open to any and all suggestions, glad I found this site, feel free to cluck at me anytime.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You might like to check out the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping you'll find useful. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center Here is a nice article on raising chicks for the first few weeks. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/...ks-the-first-60-days-of-raising-baby-chickens The basics for the first few weeks are a brooder (place to keep them) a heat source usually a red heat lamp (baby chicks need to be 95* to start with then you lower it 5* a day, a thermometer is nice to have also), and then feeders and waterers. If you check the Coops section there is a part on brooders, they can be plain or fancy, a lot of people just use big cardboard boxes.
Black Stars are a black sex link, McMurrary Hatchery sells them http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/black_star.html
you might post on/ check out your state thread for chicken keeping neighbors if they know of anyone local who has them, sometimes the feed stores will but it is getting late in the year https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread
