A Quail Daydream

I bought button quail eggs on eBay before I got a decent incubator, 😂 my husband saw the homemade incubator my son and I were trying to build and he said "you want an incubator for your birthday?" 🤭
If it weren't for him buying it, I would have probably only hatched a few
But almost all the shipped eggs hatched 😲

Were they too noisy, stinky, expensive to feed?
I didn't keep track of feed costs but so, so, so much poop. The eggs were meh, I preferred using my chicken eggs. I could never get the meat to not be tough no matter what I tried. They were noisy but that didn't bother me.
I only had one that was personable out of all the ones I hatched. The babies are cute yes, they're also very very dumb.

Those are fair points. I felt similarly about my button quail sometimes. Especially about the eggs, although button quail eggs are much smaller than Coturnix eggs 😆

The poop isn't too much of a worry right now for me because I compost pretty much everything using the hot pile method. but I won't know until I raise them if I can keep up with the amount.

I don't really care if my quail like me since I plan to eat them. I raised chickens for meat and they were too friendly 😩

Hopefully you can keep up with the level of poop :S

I will say, after my first batch, I would take one or two hens and put them with the baby quail. I had less issues then. Obviously make sure your hens are behaving. First batch was fine, my second batch with adult hens one of them got quite possessive of the babies so she did best alone with them.

How many did you keep? I plan to have about 12 for eggs/breeding. 10 hens and two males, with a two cage set up. Think the poop will be really bad for twelve?

The poop level of my giant foster dogs is a lot, and I can't even compost it. They are hopefully getting adopted out soon. They are sweet but I'd rather deal with bird poo than dog poo.

I'm thinking that as soon as the dogs find their family, am getting quail. It was a lot of work to keep the dogs and compared to two 85lb dogs that are able to knock me over, keeping a few birds in a cage sounds so much more pleasant and relaxing.

My numbers rose and fell a bit depending on hatches and culling.
But my main group was like 15-20.

I would still expect quite a bit of poop. But it might be more manageable depending on your setup.

I have always said if I do get back into quail ever, I'd want to do an aviary style.

These are so helpful. I probably plan to keep that many when we account for the ones I am raising to eat.
Based on your feedback about poop, I'm thinking I should redesign my coop to accommodate my wheelbarrow or at least have trays below the wire.
I've seen some quail coops that have sand on rhino liner coated wood, and they scooped the poops with a cat litter scoop. I tried that with button quail but their toes would get built up poo sand rocks so I think I'd have the same issue with the Coturnix.

Oh! And one person I've watched online uses trays under the wire with a sheet of compostable Kraft paper. He says he changes it daily. If I were on a larger property I would definitely do a sturdy greenhouse with an attached aviary.

If you decide to do poop trays, you’ll thank yourself later if you design everything so you can bring the wheelbarrow to the cages, so you can dump them right in. Those trays get HEAVY if you don’t empty them every single day 😅
I use all plastic trays under my cages. I bring the wheelbarrow right up to the cages and empty all the trays into that. When I put the trays back I fill them with a layer of Cozy n Fresh pellets - they absorb moisture and help keep the smell down
