I am new to ducks this year. Our 4 mo. black swed is just now laying.

Question #1--Will they go broody only if they are mating? (never catch them but I do have a drake Kakhi, runner and cayuga.) The eggs do not look fertile right now.

Question #2-- Can you make a nest for them? They are penned up during the night, always and somedays but mostly free range during the day. She lays in the run (shared with chickens, geese, turkeys) and sometimes out in the grass. She has made a nest in my ornamental grass but she cant stay out there all night.
I was thinking of getting a rubbermaid box and cutting a door for the duck if I left it on the ground of the run. What do you guys think? I would rather her be safe.

I'm sorry no one caught your questions till now.
They will go broody even if they are not mating.
You can try the box idea, she may be attracted to it. Is there a time of day she normally lays that you can keep her in the pen so she might see the box as her best option?

When she first started laying it was early morning (or sometime after putting them up for the night) Now it does vary. I may try the box just to see if she will use it. The next egg I find I'm going to check again to see if it is fertile.
Thanks for the reply DwD.
