Hi Everyone,
New chickie keeper here!

Just wanted to pop in and "introduce" myself.
We have added 6 lovely little "hens" to our home in the last week, and are very excited to be starting this adventure. For us, they will be egg layers, and "pets". With some added bonus for pest/bug reduction in the yard.

We have: (all of them of course are named.... My next post will probably be in the HELP ME, WHAT IS THE SEX OF THIS CHICKEN?)
Buff Orpington
Rhode Island Red
Speckled Sussex
Lavendar Orpington
Ameraucana
Barred Rock

Since we are just getting set up, I'm sure that I will have LOADS of questions.

This site has an ENORMOUS amount of information, so thank you all ahead of time for sharing the knowledge. :)

And if you can chat with some local poultry folks, find your state thread in the link below:

Welcome to BYC - and the poultry obsession, so glad you've joined the flock!
How old are your "hens" at this point? For the breeds listed it's best to assess gender at 6+ weeks, unless you have a blatant "loud and proud" looking cockerel growing some bright comb/wattles prior to that point. When you do get ready to post them be sure to take nice, clear photos that are taken in natural lighting and show each bird in side profile in a natural, standing position so that we can see the whole bird. Those photos are what work best for gender evaluation.

Thank you for joining us at Backyard chickens. When your chicks are 6-8 weeks old you can post individual pictures of them at "what breed or gender is this."

You're going to have a lovely mixed flock! Best wishes they all turn out to be female and you get loads of eggs.

Thanks for joining us!

Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
