Exactly right.

And in keeping, I know it's late, but does anyone have any thoughts on the word 'socialist?'

Is it really a bad word?

From experience, my dear. Never assume 23,000 people can join in a discussion about anything like this without arguing. Heck, not even 12 people can! It's the nature of the beast.

That speaks volumes about our society. But what you say is true. I was on the bad side of a conversation on this site once, my comments were deleted. My feelings were half and half about that. Half of me was glad what I said was gone, but the other half was mad that my words were censored.

I love catch words, everyone lines up like iron filings on a sheet of paper as the magnet moves beneath. If only the word had some power beyond that of `singing the bull to sleep'.

We have ~80 trillion dollar actual debt (unfunded mandates and all that). Average personal debt: ~$27,000. HS dropout rate approaching 1/3 in some parts of the nation...

What was that that Custer's scout Bloody Knife said to Lonesome Charlie Reynolds Just before LBH? Something like "Today we go home by a road we do not know". And I don't know as any one word/concept can compass the problem.

Now, I'm going to go fall over and hum the Internationale until I fall to sleep (I really am IvanIvanovich, after all)

Write and call your congress critters Do Ben Franklin proud

I do not in any way understand this comment. The original topic is socialism. Very few members have posted to this thread. Only a couple have touched on the original topic. The majority of the conversation has been a debate about whether or not 'chicken folks' should be allowed to talk about the word 'socialism.'

The only thing this thread has turned into is a moderator inquisition.

Yes it is a bad word. The BYC profanity filters should delete it.

For example when I type "fecal matter" the board changes it to poo.

When I type "socialist" it should change it to "a conquered person or
one who ignores the history of governments".

My chickens are socialists.

I believe the idea that socialism entails is a good one. The reason socialism is considered something bad is because it doesn't work, and every time a people or government has attempted to employ the idea of socialism failure follows closely behind.

So, to answer the OP: socialism is a decent idea. But it's a bad thing because it doesn't work. The first time someone thought it up and tried it it didn't work. Same with the second time. Same with the third. And so on.....

When I type "socialist" it should change it to "a conquered person or
one who ignores the history of governments".

A conquered person?

That would depend on the government's history you choose to read. Marie Antionette might argue about the 'conquered' part.

Also, I'd guess King George III just hated those socialist colonists who took care of their neighbors and didn't depend on the Crown during during their insurrection.

And wasn't the American west was 'conquered' by folks who looked after each other.

Would you not agree that modern civilization depends on shared resources?

Dude, are you advocating socialism or trying to be clever? I can't tell.

Human beings do not excel in a socialist type system. They may for a
while but it doesn't last, even when a nationalistic attitude, such as
a Russian, is present.

"socialism" in itself is a too open a term.

Bringing up the American west is questionable also. How does a
political theory apply to that? There are very few humans on this
planet who's ancestors haven't been conquered.

Actually, if you think hard about it, human beings only ever 'excel' when they are in socialistic situations. The old saying...united we stand...

And, I agree..."socialism" is a very open term. That is the point of this entire thread, to delve into the different meanings.

Bringing up the American west was case in point. The pioneers who settled remote areas were dependent on each other for survival...aka...socialism.

The whole point is to debunk this fancy heated catchword: SOCIALIST

Because we are all socialists.

I have no idea why you made a Russian allusion. PM me if you meant to use Lenin's revolution as an example of socialism.
