A real valid reason for employers to .......

They check everything these days.Credit report and facebook posting determine whether you are a good insurance risk. I am sure employers will look at FB to keep track of their employees.

What happens with kids who homeschool? Will they take the word of a parent?I doubt it.The schools won't believe me when I tell them my child is sick. No, I have to spend $115 on a doctor visit to get a note so the absence is valid. Here, you miss 11 days and they fail you.

No it specificially said for PARENTS, not the kids! It was a newsletter for parents.

I still read it as checking up on the student's tardy record. The newsletter may have been targeted for parents, since these are values that parents need to instill in their kids - but I don't read it that they are checking to make sure that parents are getting their kids to school on time.

I think this is a excellent tool. It shows kids in high school and even in college that its important to be on time and to go to class. Some kids just go thru the motions of school and don't realize that school is setting them up to be successful and starting their career. If students realize that they may not get their "dream job" because they wanted to skip their first class in the morning; maybe it can be a wake up call for them. Help them see the importance of being early or at least on time at a young age. Heck we have people at our work who can't make it on time and they are close to 20 years government service....

Records of a student are confidential according to law. Took a federal law to require schools to make everything in a minor student's records available for viewing by parents, and to give parents the right to include additional information if they felt that some of the included file information was in error or misleading.

HOWEVER, if a person is being interviewed for a job, they are typically asked to provide for transcripts of their OWN schooling. K-12 transcripts often list things like absences, tardies and disciplinary action (this can vary by district or state). College transcripts do not. Without signed permission, transcripts cannot be seen by someone who is merely interested. Only the parent or legal gaurdian of a minor child can give permission to release a transcript, and only the individual can give permission to release a transcript of themself.

I think someone has their information mixed up if the newsletter implied that a potential employer of a parent could be looking at that person's children's transcripts to verify the parent's timliness.

Ok I copied off from my email:
This week's Handbook Moment:

TARDINESS
If a student is late to homeroom in the morning, he/she will report to the office before reporting to class. A student has one day to bring a note explaining the tardy to have the "unexcused tardy" changed to an "excused tardy". A student with excessive tardiness will be referred to the administration. Approved tardy excuses will include uncertain weather conditions, vehicle problems, family emergencies, etc. Tardiness due to a student being unprepared will not be excused, even with a note.

Now is the time to establish a record of responsibility. Note that all tardiness and absences are reported on report cards/transcripts. Many times, employers will ask for a copy of a student's transcript before hiring in order to verify an employee's work ethic and time management.

I think it is a poorly worded document.
They are referring to the student's record, not the parent's. I work in a school agency and one of the things done there the scanning of student records for permanence. The bare minimum is preserved. Mostly it's a folder with their classes and grades and that's about it. Pure transcript, no *notes*. And i've never heard of an employer asking for the school transcript.
Now, searching the internet and Facebook and such.. oh yes, it's done by all sorts of employers these days. That's where the real nonemployment danger lies-- in those party pics and foul mouth statements the kids post.

Instead of expressing your concerns on a chicken forum you should be contacting the source of your concern, the school. There are several reasons that I suggest this:
  1. The letter from the school is ambiguous to say the least. One would expect that those who are entrusted with the education of your children would be capable of communicating clearly and precisely.
  2. It would be a good time to point out that the release of your child's records without your permission is (as Sonoran Silkies has already pointed out) a violation of federal law.
  3. It may give you the opportunity to use my "I'd like to see them" ploy. (see post #9)

But than I have no problem with being confrontational, particularly with those that I am paying my hard earned money to. As a matter of fact I have a line memorized for just such occasions, to wit:

In a loud, firm voice I say, "WHOA! Let's get something straight! You are the one sucking at the trough and I'm the one filling it! You do not ask the questions, I do! I ask the questions and you give me the answers. Do we understand each other?"

I have a particular fondness for the trough bit. When dealing with petty government bureaucrats I modify that phrase to "public trough".

On the first part, I think they're threatening to put it on the kid's record and it won't affect the parents' records at all. I don't know of a single employer that checks grade school records of any kind for any adult worker. They might ask for those records when the child tries to get a work permit from the school like Nitrous said. I have been applying for jobs all my life and the only time I even get asked for any school record was when I had just graduated from college and was applying for a job that required a degree.

It may be a newsletter for parents, but what it is referring to is the child developing the kind of responsibility (being on time and being present) that they will need in the workplace.
