Good evening!

We have been volunteering at our local humane society, and we will be fostering two puppies who were just rescued from a situation of extreme neglect. They have roundworms and are on their second day of treatment. We also have six hens and an eleven year old rescue who is on a monthly heartworm+ pill. The humane society is sending something in a spray bottle with the word “rescue” written on it, and we are supposed to pick up the puppies’ poop, spray the spot with a hose, and spritz it with the potion in the bottle.

Now I’m kind of freaking out about our dog and the chicks catching worms from the two puppies. I have never dewormed the chicks, and our older dog is healthy and happy. Does anyone know how contagious these are??? Should we cancel the foster? Should we do a big round of dewormer for everyone? How do I deworm the chicks? 😬

There's no need to deworm chicks if they are in a brooder. If they are being raised on soil, you can worm them at 6 weeks old. Dog worms cannot infect chickens and visa versa, they are host specific. An exception are hookworms.
To deworm chicks at 6 weeks old, use a syringe without a needle, draw up 1/4ml Albendazole and give it to each chick orally. Then repeat in 10 days. For older birds, give 1/2ml orally.
Albendazole kills all types of worms except tapeworms. If you see tapeworm segments in feces, use Praziqauntel to kill tapeworms. Equimax equine paste is best. Equimax can be purchased at Tractor Supply (TSC) or a feed store.
Here's where you buy Albendazole:
