OOOOHHHHH!!!! What a wonderful Father - Daughter project. I envision lots of bonding time in this venture. You can bond over all of the planning. I do hope you build your own coop. Lots of fun times to be had in that. She will learn how to safely handle power tools... or you can both learn that together. Hopefully you'll both retain all of your fingers in the process! Scavenging for building materials, design, re-design, choosing the perfect location, and finally, putting it all together. I have picked up lots of "like new" building materials at my favorite shopping place. I call it the "Insert name of your town here" Mall. AKA the town dump.
What ever you do, be sure to build big enough to house twice as many birds as you want (plan 4 s.f. per bird) Build it with plenty of height between floor and ceiling. And build it with plans to incorporate a divider to accomodate a broody hen, a brood of chicks, a sick bird, or any other number of issues that might crop up. Lots of natural lighting and ventilation is key, even/especially in a cold climate.
