A few days ago my one and only free ranging rooster, my dark brahma boy, got cornered in the horse pen wedged behind the water barrel but with his hind end exposed. She was curious and pulled some of his feathers out and gnawed on his hocks and made them bleed. He was walking fine when I pulled him out, but the next day he would not put weight on one leg at all and it was sitting fluffed up and "not looking too good" at all. It was after dark, so next morning I went to the vet supply for some antibiotics there to inject him with, and the gal behind the desk suggested I spray the hock injuries with Vetricyn. Odorless, colorless, no taste. She said it was non-irritating and you can spray it in your own mouth or in your eye. I asked her what antibiotic she recommended to inject him with to sorta jump start his recovery, and she said nothing, just spray this stuff on his wounds. Okay... so I got to the rooster and by that day he smelled bad. Like from three feet away and was more hunkered down and puffed up than the night before. So I picked him up and sprayed his hocks with what looks like water, and set him back in the cage. I only go there once a day to do their chores, and the bottle said to spray it several times a day if needed. I didn't think he was going to make it at this point. He had pale yellow pus type looking ooze from his hocks. Next day, he was up and eating, and putting some weight on that leg!!! WHAT!!!??? I sprayed him again and today he only smelled about a third, and most of the swelling is gone, and the hocks don't have that puffy look like before, and neither do his legs and toes. I will continue to update if he makes it or not, but two days ago I thought he was a goner. Today he is walking, eating and tried to avoid being picked up, all good signs!!! So... it ain't cheap, but I highly recommend Vetricyn to be added to your medicine cabinet. I will not be without it again, let me tell you!
