A Sign of the Times:

Wow, this topic got a few feathers ruffled!! Whomever mentioned liability is dead on as the reason for the drug/alcohol testing. In our 'sue and be sued' world of shame and blame and 'collect a buck when you can' - world the person compromising his/her abilities to effectively do the job they were hired for by taking drugs and/or alcohol does not need to be paid to be a risk. Even over the counter meds can be dangerous if a person has them in their system at work, or mixing meds or drugs...anything that compromises the physical and mental alertness of a person's ability to do what they are given a salary to do, should be the person's responsibility to deal with and not the employer's. An employer that can say "have a nice life" in a pre-employment drug test is lucky to have cut their potential losses before hiring the person because it is often a tedious process to get rid of a bad/risky employee. Soooooo, for the safety of other workers and the traveling public, by all means I too support pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion and random drug and alcohol testing in the workplace and on the roads and highways with CDL drivers. I will wait my turn in line to pee in a cup anytime it is required of me.....Darlene

I'm against the whole drug testing thing anyway.

Unless a person is getting high on the job or comming to work high, its none of the employers business.

Marijuana stays in your system almost a full month after use. So you hardly have to be a drug addict to test positive for marijuana.

cocaine and crack are long gone in a matter of days and habitual users can easily slip through the cracks of drug tests.

Herione is probably the only drug worth testing for because an addict has to use continuously or they become violently ill. That means they would either be high on the job or dopesick at work, and neither condition is productive.

I have no experience with meth or hallucinogens, but most places dont bother testing for peyote and magic mushrooms anyway.

Wow, this did get a few feathers ruffled!

I've worked in the restaurant business and we never had to take drug tests. If we did, 80% of my coworkers would have failed. In fact, many coworkers refused to go to the hospital after an accident (fall, etc) because they would have failed a drug test and lost their job.

Now that I'm in a professional field, getting drug tested is expected.

I'd rather not work around people who are doing drugs. If that's bad for me to say, so be it!

=WildskyMy hubby is a steel worker......

He had both legs broken last year when someone dropped or more acurate let the I beam tip over on him.
All employees there are randomly tested and tested before being hired. After the above accident the guy that dropped the I beam (off a forklift) was tested as well.

Sounds like your hubby ties rebar too.
Here in British Columbia we have a bridge named "The Iron Workers Memorial Bridge" For all the Iron /Steel Workers who lost their lives building it. Iam not saying all these workplace deaths were caused by drug using co-workers but I bet some were, and if not for mandatory testing maybe more lives would have been lost.

I wish I owned my own business, but I dont so I have to submit to testing. If I may ask what type of business you have? If it involves any type of operating equipment, and you are hiring someone to do that job would you wnat them high while operating such equipment?? Or would you turn a blind eye and take your chances as to the workers conditions while at work??
