but I feel that before people go into a TSC store they should know something about what they are getting into. Not just do a spur of the momment impulse buy not having any clue about raising chickens.

Oh complaining about their mess and stink doesn't bother me as much as those who wait till the chicks are in their living room THEN they come on here and ask what to feed them, where to put them and what bedding to use. Or those who have eggs in the bator THEN ask how to do it or post what to do with the chicks AS they're hatching.

I don't understand why people haven't even bought food for them and some can't even go buy any until they've had the chicks in their care for several days and want to know what to feed them in the meantime.

These are the ones that bother me most.

ahh..its okay to learn as you go too! Just as long as you LEARN and ask questions...
I bought my first chicks with just the basic knowledge... i mean REAL basic...lol (like they need heat and chick food basic..)
then i got them home..put them under heat and joined BYC that night!

People getting into chickens without researching ahead of time is like someone getting a rabbit. I didn't know squat about chickens when we first got them. I didn't know squat about the rabbits either. We learned, they survived. There are very few people around that research pets or animals before they buy them. Now we have horses. Do I know what I am doing - nope. I will figure it out as I go like I did with the chickens and the rabbits.

I'm with debiraymond. As long as people make the effort to learn, that's what matters. It doesn't really matter *when* they learn, as long as they do. If they make it to BYC, that means they want to learn. I, for one, would like to make that as pleasant as possible for everyone. You can't change what's already been done, all you can do is move forward.
