A small rant people buying chicks and not knowing the basic care.

I couldn't agree more! Same goes for any creature! I work at a shelter and you wouldn't believe the amount of people who buy animals from the pet store or craigslist or wherever, then surrender them in awful shape because they don't want to/can't afford to care for them anymore. Really?! Cause it appears as though you didn't put forth much effort from day one! We got a trio of Russian tortoises a few months ago that were being housed in a 55 gallon tank with two huge bearded dragons. No heat lamp, the wrong substrate, a diet of iceburg lettuce, and a little dry water bowl. They were probably pretty close to death when we got them and it took us weeeeeks to get them back into a healthy condition.

There's nothing wrong with asking advice when you need it. But at the very least do some research on basic care PRIOR to acquiring the animal! They are not toys, they're living, breathing creatures with needs and they can suffer greatly when those needs aren't met.

I *think* I read most of the posts, since I usually just hit the "recent posts" button and go from there but I must say, this doesn't sound representative of what I read. I really don't see too many people, let alone new owners, complaining about nasty or stinky, but just asking questions, which I'm happy to answer. The biggest complaint I can recall hearing is the one about brooders being dusty and that's one I've never got. I'm currently brooding my third set inside (in my living room) and I've never been aware of much extra dust. Perhaps I just can't tell between the cats and dogs we already have.

I Know this feeling one lost a feather last night due to a playing fight (which was funny to watch looked like two kids going at it)
I brought the feather in to the wife and look honey our first feather she was like yeah and so, she doen't really get exiceted she had chickens when she was a child.

I think alot of people lack common sense these days. I used to work in an animal hospital and I saw people get puppies or kittens and have no idea that they would be so much work. Any animal takes a ton of work. I am brand new to chickens. I did a little research before I got them and I am trying to learn as much as I can now. I always wonder what happens to some of these cute baby animals that go home with people that haven't thought things through. Its sad. I am glad to see so many people on here that really love their chickens. I named all mine and don't think of them as just egg layers that will get just food and water from me. They are part of the family now.

I agree that people shouldn't just jump in without any knowledge.... My chicks arrive in May and I'm spending my time now reading everything I can on them and building my coop/run, but I'm still afraid I won't have learned enough, and I'm sure I'll be on here asking LOTS of questions.

The other day, while at TSC looking to see what supplies they sold, I started talking with a lady who literally decided to buy chickens at that moment. Her poor hubby was loading up the cart with all sorts of supplies including a chicken hutch (a box with a roost) and she was telling me how she knew absolutely NOTHING about chickens. I imparted what little info I have learned so far and told her to check out BYC!

I agree that some people who ask questions sound a little like they're complaining but at least they are asking! The ones who don't are the ones to worry about.

I Firmly agree with the one's who don't scare me the most all I am saying is what di dyou people think (the one's who never asked any questions just jumped right on in like that lady Thank you for telling her what lil info you knew the same goes for me I tell anyone who I speak to about raising chickens to come to this site I feel that at least if they come here they will learn alot and give the chickens a fighting chance next to someone who buys them and then says now what.
I was in TSC the other day and some guys kids told Dad they wanted chickens so after ten mins or so of please dad he bought them now here you have to buy 6 of them so they did and dad ask the guy what all do I need he look at dad very straight faced and said I have no idea and the guy that would is off today.

I stepped over and asked do you have any clue of what to do he was like no I sure don't so I told him to come here as I was showing him what all he needed and I told him he needed to build a coop and would need a brooder so as we parted ways I felt those have a chance to live.

Oh gosh I just had to comment on this one, we had 11 chicks in a big rubbermaid container in our living room. By the third week when their feathers were getting in real good, I could have died with how much dust there was!! We cleaned the shavings out completely every two days, I was really surprised by all the dust!! We have a small home, maybe that has something to do with how quickly it accumulated? I have two dogs and a cat and this dust was verrrrrrrry noticeable. Maybe it has to do with the breed? The weather? I have noooooooooooo idea but you are lucky lol! When I couldnt take the dust anymore I kicked them into the porch and as soon as they had good feathering, into a brooder we made in the coop.

No amount of research could have prepared me for this because quite frankly everyones experiences are SO different! Picture me asking about chick dust before having them, you'd have a lot of different responses as to how dusty they are, how dirty, loud, etc. There is rarely a uniform answer with chickens is what I have learned!! We all do the best we can for our birds and people who are on here are here to learn and share. It's a great forum, I don't share the OPs feelings that there are a lot of complainers, I really have not seen that at all. Maybe I am one of those complainers for hating the chick dust?? Who knows!! I'm very glad to have such a nice place to go with my trials and triumphs of chicken raising

No amount of research can prepare you for REALLY having chicks or chickens..it ALL looks good in a book...
there will ALWAYS be something that you are unsure about...
if you are soooo smart and have the answers to everything...not sure what your doing on here then... (you must have had a question at one time or another...)

just saying..
