A soft shelled egg???

You can feed whatever you like. Some have no problem with layer.

I don’t feed layer because I have roosters and young chicks all the time:oops: chicken math lol

I’d offer oyster shell in a separate dish. Could you get some chicken vitamins with D to add to their water? It seemed to help my OE get hard shells. She laid shell less eggs for 2 weeks and someone on here suggested it. It worked within a few days. Hope she lays some normal eggs for you soon!
Her eggs have been totally normal up until this one....its why Im confused. All of my chickens are hens and all the same age, and nobody has laid a soft shelled egg since They all began laying probably 3 weeks ago. But thank you for the advice, I'll try to find some vitamins as you said.

it happens. A couple of my pullets have done it since they started laying. So long as its not a regular thing, it should be fine. Essentially, the egg traveled too fast through the egg machine and it forgot to get a shell.

Sorry to jump on this thread. I’m new to it all. I just got my hens yesterday and bought layer feed. What kind of feed should I be giving them?
Feed an 18-22% all flock, maintenance, or grower feed. Provide free-choice calcium on the side. Make sure when you feed treats they don't encompass more than 10% of all fee given.

It did have a shell....it was even olive in color! Lol And even though it was soft, it didnt break from the drop. Strange....I'll hope thats her only one! I have only one Olive Egger, so I know its her egg. I have some good suggestions on here if it continues.

Personally, I would feed them grower or all flock, and make sure you have OS on the side. I have my OS in a container right next to my grit so they know where to go to get both.
Ok, would it be ok for me to finish out the bag of layer feed and then switch?

Love all the posts about feeding grower or all flock feed. When I started with chickens, back in the dark ages, I could easily find 20-21% layer feed with animal protein. Now all you can get is flock feed at that percentage & of course most are vegetarian & up the protein with more soy. I always feed oyster shell with layer feed & some hens still eat oyster shell. So two weeks ago I switched to a grower feed 19% since a few of my first year hens have molted since Thanksgiving & now my eggs have thin shells! Next bag will be back to layer at 16.8%! Never had a problem when I had roosters & never switched on the off season when some were molting & some were not. JMHO

Most avoid layer feed simply because it is more costly just for added calcium, often lacks in protein, and can cause delayed development, liver failure, etc in non-laying birds. I switched off it and never gone back since. If you have thin shells try letting your birds forage. It fixes everything and creates beautiful bright yolks.
