A Thread About Trees

I remember Bass Lake in the Early 90's drove around the corner and there where a ton of people standing on the road side looking at 2 bald eagles in a dead tree on the south end of the lake just sitting there taking a rest I assume lol
Oh that is so cool! Here in Pittsburgh; the biggest thing in town is the Bald Eagle cam. Theya are nesting along one of the rivers. 2 of their eggs hatched last week There is a third egg was supposed to hatch a couple of days ago. Don't know if it did.
Best,
Karen

Whew! Didn't mean to be gone from this thread for so long. I've been having fun gearing up for spring. I have a white oak sprout and two lemon sprouts - one of which is a twin! Two shoots and two taproots coming out of the same seed. Quite fun.

These are two of the 6 willows I have growing in my yard. They are huge! Thanks to them I can rarely find plants that work, but without them this house would be like living in pop can in a parking lot during the summer. It's funny I just noticed this thread - I had just posted a couple of pictures of one of them although it hasn't got any leaves in yet - still wintery here - on another thread a few days ago.

We can't span the trunk of this tree even with 7 of us linking hands. The other 4 are smaller, but still huge.

Two shots of the same tree, without its leaves. My husband standing in front of the same tree.

This tree, the same one the little bird is posing in front of, is casting all of the shade in my yard that our dog is enjoying. In the background of that one, you can see the tree from the first 2 photos. This trunk we can span - if we use all of us.

Two of my grandsons standing in front of the "little bird" tree.

Got my purple robe locust tree replacement yesterday. Going to graft some of it onto the 2 rootstocks from previous orders. Grafts died and black locust rootstock took over. I now graft a piece of any tree I buy onto another tree that I have. Tired of losing a variety due to grafts dying. Do it on fruit trees all the time.

Glad you got it

Here is a graft I did last year. Butternut onto black walnut. It grew 6+ feet and is 10+ feet tall total. My first success on walnut.

Would love some input . . really, I am desperate for input.

I have access to a scionwoon supply about an hour north of me for a small fee for each. Can anyone suggest a reliable method of grafting that is pretty foolproof, and perhaps a utube vidoe of the method as I am a visual learner. What little research I did a year ago, the result vary, on average a 50% sucessrate. Would like to get that rate up considerably.

Also I wonder if the rootstock used affects the success rate?

My other issue is with over 150+ varieties of apple scionwood, the selecting of just a few is daunting. I can find descriptions of the fruit, but there is soooo much more to an apple tree liek disease resistance, size, vigor, use of the apples, keeping qualities. Suggestions on finding this info?

Thanks.

Oh you lucky duck! I have been researching apple trees too. Getting ready to replace my aging orchard.
Couple of websites and suggestions;
Trees of Antiquity website: http://www.treesofantiquity.com/
they have info on all the different antique apple tress. A fascinating read!
Stark Brothers Nursery Website: http://www.starkbros.com/
They have apple tree info too. Also have their trees rated for where they can grow best.

We are in Zone 5B. Zip 15658 . After seeing what damage the -30 wind chill in the polar vortexes
wrought in my orchard, I have decided to buy trees rated for zones 4-6 instead of zones 5-8.
I won't have my Maiden Blush I so wanted, ( best applesauce apple ever!!) However, I can get
another Snow Apple ( yum!) and a new one for me a "Northern Spy". Plus some others I will decide
on later. Not sure what I wild do about cherry trees. That Hansen's Bush Cherry is real popular,
I might check it out. It is self-pollinating and bears in -2 years instead of 3-5 for the trees. I have a
long lot line next to the neighbors driveway. It would look real good as a boundary fence.

Hum,
I had wanted 4 trees. Don't have room. Was going to get 3 but now I see KinderKrisp is a child of the other one I wanted , HoneyCrisp. So think I will settle on a KinderKrisp and a Starkspur® Red Rome Beauty. ( zones 4-8)

That gives me a great eating apple and a top pie apple. I am not into cider or jams/jellies out of apples. ( for those I am a berry person, smile).
