That's exactly what I am hoping for. One flock would be nice but from the
amazing response to this thread maybe it will be even more.

I know it will save MY future flocks.

I am speechless!! You are one of the BYC members that I follow....( shhhhh)..... I believe that this is one of my biggest fears. I check my flock on a daily bases and listen for any strange noises that wasn't there before. Luckily for me..... I have only had one incident that I was gave a sick bird. She stayed in my front yard for over 30 days, away from all my other birds, and she never got better, she actually got worse after the 30....so I culled my very first chicken. I was very cautious then, as I am now. Thankyou for posting this. I am sorry for your loss, but maybe somebody can learn from your mistakes

I'm not much for tears but you gave me a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I hope it comes back whenever I add to my flock. Thanks. I respect your courage.

I live in Sleepy Eye MN. Right now there has been an outbreak of Avian Influenza at a major turkey barn between Evan and Morgan MN. Evan is 8 miles from me and Morgan is 17 miles. I first heard about it last friday when I was picking up chick starter at my local feed mill. Supposedly one of the big turkey farms was on lockdown. I've heard reports that they gassed anywhere from 2,000-12,000 birds there.

At first I thought this was a just gossip and nothing to worry about. I talked to some of the local poultry guys and they heard nothing about it. Well that afternoon I was driving to work and I saw a State MN Board of Health truck out at a farm by Evan and white tape up. I call 2 different local vets and they knew nothing about it. They claimed they would give me a call if they heard anything.

Ok yesterday rolls around (monday)... 3 days after I heard about this 'outbreak'. I get calls from multiple friends of mine that live in that area. The state vet from Fariboult came by their place and demands that they get a sample of their flocks tested every monday for the next 6 weeks. Supposedly they were only going within a 3 mile radius. But... some people that I work with live 5 miles on the other side of Morgan and the State guys showed up there too whether or not they had birds. Supposedly there has been no confirmed cases outside of that turkey barn. They just want to make sure that outside birds haven't spread it. I guess we'll see how this all turns out.

Btw... both my mom and brother are certified testors for pullorum/typhoid. All of our birds are routinely tested anyways just because we go to swaps and shows.

Those are the primary diseases the vets are looking for here in CT, even
though outbreaks haven't happened in years. It doesn't seem they are
even all that concerned with MG & MS.

Has anyone contracted this from hatchery stock? I just placed an order with Ideal. On their website they say they are avian flu free and typhoid free, but I can't find any info about MG.

In a way I am freaked out. I have alot of very expensive birds that could possibly be at risk. I am also glad that they are on top of things and taking steps to prevent the spread of it.
