Abandonded pets-RANT

So what happened to the horse?

If he was wearing a bridle or halter, especially dragging a lead rope, I'd have to wonder if he was really dumped, seems more likely he got away from someone, or it's even possible he fell out of a trailer (could be why he's new to the area).

Honestly, I thought that's what happened too. The horse escaped, since it was still wearing a bridle or halter. Many horses that are dumped, usually aren't wearing any tack or they are left in pens. Even though, I don't believe this was the issue in this particular case, horse dumping and abandonment is on the rise.

I want to find the people that are dumping dogs like my Earl,(a desert rescue), and horses, out in the DESERT, and take them out near Yuma and dump them out in the middle of nowwhere with no water and food or shelter and leave them. When my Early was found, he had cactus in his face and front paws, was so underweight that he could hardly stand, and he was nearly blind from the sun. People are now dumping horses out there, and expecting them to join up with the wild horse herds that no longer live out there.
I get so mad when I see ads for foals and such that people want to sell, and especially when the ad includes a line for the old barn nag that they are seeking a ,"Good home for" for $1500obo, while they espouse her breeding potential!
I have offered to take in a couple of horses, but I guess I don't look fancy enough or offer the sweet tax write off that some of the not for profit rescues can offer. I took care of 2 antique and naviculared mares through a rough and wet winter, and the wraps, supplements, bute, msm and glucosamine, and vitamins as well as feed and hay about broke me, but at least I knew those old ladies had a smooth end. I would have loved to have been able to take a ride at least once though.

That's terrible! ... We used to have two cats that for some reason didn't feel like using the litter box, and would crap EVERYWHERE... anyway we put new carpet in (carpet being their favorite thing to poop and pee on) and they just kept doing it, unfortunately we were selling our house, and this HAD to stop. The good thing is that we didn't have them declawed, and they were both very avid hunters so we found a home (the boarding stable we rode our horses at) and "donated them," as they were in need of mousers that were fixed (which they were) and they are now both happily living in relative luxury, catching mice, and sneaking treats from riders.

Anyway, that's a terrible thing to happen! ... I have a horse, and we couldn't keep him in Ontario any longer due to the weather (he has really bad heaves, aka copd for horses) and his breathing was being affected by the hot and very humid summers we have, so when my riding instructor (family friend too) moved out west to Sask. he went with her and lived on her farm, now she's moved to Alberta and he's moved with her again. I miss having horses, so I'll be alleviating some of the hurt in the horse industry

Funnily enough though... I've noticed a big downturn in profit from auctions here, not so much private sale as riding schools are constantly popping up and are constantly in need of ponies and horses (more ponies).

Lucky for me, we are able after finding out my dad's business's incoperated stuff doesn't say what it does and what can be covered, so we are now searching for a pony to train and sell on locally as a semi-longterm project, and what it has to do with his business is that we can now claim all feed, vet, training, equipment, etc.

I wonder what they thought when they were abandonning their horse, "oh shh spanky the horse... no one will hear you" except its a bloody great horse!

Honestly,I don't know. My DH handed over the horse to the man that was chasing him down. The gentleman was going to call a lady he thought may have possibly recently purchased the horse(in hopes it had escaped from her).I am very curious as to what happened to him also.My gut tells me that someone around my area will take him in and care for him if he was dumped. That makes me feel a bit better.
And to clarify,I know nothing about horses but the horse had on a harness(?) maybe. The thing that goes around their snout and head.LOL Can you tell I was born in suburbia??LOL

Also,we rescued 2 abandonded kitties this winter that someone had dumped and our neighbor took in a 3rd one.One was found literally in our trash can.He was in such bad shape he could not even hold his backend up.The other was rescued the next day from the trash can. These are some of the sweetest kitties I have ever owned. They would never have survive another day with the snow storm that moved in the next day-I'm in upstate NY.

Not even a month ago I found a cat and two kittens that had crawled up through the ripped screen in my tack into the barn. They had to have been dumped cause they didn't belong to any of the neighbours and the 6-8 week old kittens were way to friendly to have been strays that have not been handled much. About a week after they showed up I was leaving the driveway and there in the ditch was the mother cat, run over by a car, dead. She was a beautiful medium haired brown tabby, very friendly. I was going to keep her as a barn cat, and even had her booked in to get spayed in a couple weeks. Well anyways I am going to keep the two kittens, Patsy and Eddie, But they are staying locked in the barn until they are older and will hopefully learn to stay closer to the barn than their mom. My 5' electric was down at the time the mom died but it now back working and surrounds an acre yard around the barn. Both Pats and Eddie have been zapped and don't seem to want to leave the yard.

I live within ten minutes of a large city on an acreage and have had many animals dumped on the property or at one one of the neighbours places. That is how I got two of my goat. They were a anniversary joke that got old, the asked my friend and neighbour if he could keep the goats at her place for a couple days until he sold them and he just never came back. It has been over 6months since I took them and still nothing from the guy.

Why are people so irresponsible, and nieve to think that farmers have nothing better to do than take in their unwanted pets. All that happens is they get hit by cars, starve to death, eaten by something, or in the worst case someone shoots them.

I haven't read through all the posts so not sure if my reply will be answered or repeated. However, this horse could have escaped. They will and have traveled long distances. They frighten easily and will run, and run. Reigns are the long leather (or nylon ) things that you use to guide the horse while riding. The halter is just on the face/head of the horse. If there were reigns, it most likely was ridden. You'd be surprised how many horses escape thier pastures or throw a rider so I would post a sign that it's been found. you can even go onto websites for sale horses and there are sections where people are looking for lost or stolen horses.
Now, being that the market for horses, and keeping them is proving to be a struggle for families, he may have been abandoned. There have been many news stories about all sorts of animals dropping off thier pets 'cause they can't afford them anymore. Yes, I know many will chime in about this, but whatever the situation, this is now a problem everywhere.

I assume the shelter has been called and that the horse is now safe. Hopefully an owner will show up for him. It's too bad.

I just noticed you said you were in Upstate NY, where in Upstate?

I thought I should mention that even if they have no halter or bridle on it doesn't mean they don't belong to anyone. I moved back in the spring about 45mins from where we were previously and my three horses jump out of the pasture and started heading back northwest were they had come from. I frantically searched and talked to neighbours for hours until finally I found someone who knew where they were. 8kms away a guy had been driving home and had seen three big drafts on the loose and chased them into one of his pastures and shut the gate. He then called all of his neighbours to see if anyone knew where they lived cause no one recognized them because I had just moved there the previous week. 8kms and 8hours later I had my horses back. They were about to cross a highway and on the other side is a river and a city so who knows what would have happened if someone would not have found them.

My horses had no tack on so a few people that had seen them assumed that they were abandoned but they weren't! Hpefully the horse found somewhere to belong whether it be back at its old home or at a new one!!

Come on up here. You could load a semi hauler with good well broke horses for less than $500 by the end of the month. I've seen registered horses with good lines and tons of training selling (or not selling since most have been listed for 6months or more) for $500.

When the slaughter debate came up I sat on the fence waiting to see how it would turn out. I watched the proslaughter people asking the antislaughter people "What will you do with the horses?" and the antislaughter people saying "Well we can deal with the dog and cat population we can deal with the horses. It will only be bad for a year or 2. People will stop breeding" At which point the proslaughter people shook their heads, called them idiots, and prayed slaughter would not be banned. I think a lot of people who were against horse slaughter are starting to change their minds. Rescues are full, horses are being neglected left and right, completely healthy horses are having to be put down, noone can feed their animals, and through it all people are still breeding. Along with all the abandoned horses being neglected we also haven't stopped horses from being used for food and mistreated along the way. Now they are hauling the horses 100s of miles to cross the border into mexico where they have even less regulations and the horses are likely meeting even worse fates than being slaughtered up here.
