Abandonded pets-RANT

Where are all these good cheap horses? I just bought a new horse recently and I had heard all about the market being bad and all the nice cheap horses out there, but all of the ones I looked at under $2000 had issues I didn't want to deal with. And I was only looking for a pleasure/trail horse, nothing fancy. I found plenty of cheap, but not so many nice ones. I ended up spending twice as much as I thought I would need to to get a good, well trained, sane horse. I did find a nice horse for my daughter earlier this year for $1000, but she's old and arthritic.

I'm having the same issue - trying to buy our first horses - have wanted them all my life and have always had to rent horses to ride. Just want nice horses to ride around here. We bought an old farm with horse stables, barn, run-in sheds, 20 acres fenced pasture - just need the horses. I've read this thread and similar threads and thought I wouldn't have a problem finding inexpensive horses but all I'm finding are $1,500 and up for non-registered 15 year old horses.

Where are these auction houses? If anyone in or near MS has horses for sale, please let me know. I will pay for shipping.

Have you looked at any rescues lately?

Many of these "cheap" horses need to be rehabilitated, but they are out there. A friend of mine just got a registered paint mare, dead-broke, papers and all for $400. She's built like a tank, but she needed some weight. She's gaining more and more weight everyday and she looks GOOD.

Just keep looking around. These cheap and free horses are not advertised. Get up with your local equine vet, and let them know what you want. Just be ready to put some $$$ into rehabilitating a good horse.

I got my horse "free" from my county sherriff's animal impound. He's no conformation marvel and he's been severely abused. He was skin and bones and scars and un-touchable. He stayed un-touchable for 18 months. I can do just about anything with him now, if I go slow. My friend who is a professional roper has been on him 3-4 times bareback.

I don't know what breed he is, but he is gaited.

On his right side you can see scars on his withers and gaskin. On his left side you can see scars on his cinch area. He has them all over, but the biggest one is that his tongue has been severed about four inches up.

Here's Forrest, my free horse:

Having done horse rescue from the slaughter auctions I have lost all respect for humanity.

There are tons of good horses out there that just need a good home and a lot of them end up at auction where the kill buyers pick them up and haul them to Canada or Mexico to be turned into dog food or people food.

The problem is not the auctions, the problem is that people continue to breed more and more badly conformed, crap horses and flood the market. They breed because their stallion always throws cremellos even if those cremellos look like a freaking ostrich crossed with a mule it's ok because it's a cremello!OMGZ!!!

Anyway I'm not going to go on my rant about people and horses but I will give you guys who want horses a good place to go and find them.

First there is the blog

Then there are the forums. There's an adoption and for sale section for under $1000 and one for over $1000.

You probably won't find a good horse that's broken and trained on craigslist but there sure are a lot of good horses on there that just need someone to train them well, teach them, and they'd be a million dollar horse. Unfortunately people are stupid.
