Abandoned Chicks at the Post Office

As has been mentioned before, the USPS does not own their own planes. They ship mail with commercial (generally passenger) carriers. So whenever the airlines are having disruption, the mail is affected - even mail that doesn't go by air - because that mail gets pushed to other services. and rail isn't running as normal, either.
Oh, I missed that. So when our chicks are flown, they're on a plane also taking Joe Smoe from A to B?

Yes, that's correct.

So when Southwest, who has market dominance in TX and a heavy presence in the surrounding States had its problem this weekend, and cancelled over a thousand flights...

Its been something of a fight with the airlines, and it continues to play out with FedEx, who does have their own jets....

Huh. I knew they did that with fish shipments, but it never occurred with poultry! Kinda neat besides the hassle

That only works if I want 25 chicks from Privett -- the only hatchery used by the only independent local farm store that allows customers to place orders -- or chicks from Hoover through TSC.
Even chicks at TSC were shipped through the local post office last I knew. Not easy to get around that without buying eggs and hatching them at home.

Well, at one time it was an "Abandoned Chicks at the Post Office" thread, and USPS policy for what to do when that happens seems relevant.

But its incredibly hypocritical of me to call anyone out for a segue, as I'm more guilty of responding to passing comments not really on topic than most. Mea culpa.
No slight intended, Stormcrow. Your postings are generally some of the most reasoned, informed ones on this site & I always try to read anything attached to your signature.

My ego is already big enough I need double doors on a building to bring it in with me - you aren't helping!

True, but there's a store employee who knows to answer the phone, pick up the chicks, and get them properly settled. So for a person with an unpredictable or busy schedule, getting them through the store might be better for the chicks (they can wait in the brooder at the store, instead of a box at the Post Office, until the person is able to come get them.)

For people able to pick up the chicks at the Post Office at the right time, either way should be fine.

That is certainly true and I don't argue that the store should be better at picking up than some people. (Once I went to pick mine up at the Post office loading docks and there were big boxes hanging out for a local store that were waiting longer than mine had, so it's not a guarantee.)

My point was actually that both options are at the mercy of the post office.
