I wouldn't help it until you believe that it isn't going to progress any further on its own. Or if it stops zipping, once it actually starts a full zip. How long since it broke the shell originally?

All you do is use a tweezer or a knife to follow the zip pattern. Go extremely slow. If any blood appears then stop.

Do I help only if it stops making progress for a certain period of time?

The fact that it's made progress in not too much time is a good sign. Keep note of what time it first pipped so you will know how much time has passed and will better be able to judge if things are progressing as they should. There are lots of folks on here that can tell you if the time frame is normal and can help you assist with hatching if you need them.

I'm not doing anything yet. It just started pipping this morning so things seem like they are moving at a good pace on their own so far.

How do I tell if it needs help out? And how do I help it out? I have never had to do that before. I do have a cup of water in there for humidity but maybe it's not enough?
