Hey everyone! I noticed my chicken has a small lump on his back near his neck, and a bunch of the feathers around that area don’t look right. They’re short, kind of curled at the ends, and not preened properly. Whenever I check that spot, he starts preening other parts of his body, almost like he’s trying to preen that same area. I don’t think it’s lice or mites since I haven’t seen anything on his roost or when he’s sitting on my lap. Could this be due to broken feather follicles or maybe a vitamin deficiency?

Btw, he has good appetite but he preens too much ( maybe because he’s a house chicken) Sometimes I help him preen his feathers. I’m currently spraying anti tick and flea spray for 3 days already. Cleaning his roost thoroughly everyday, just in case.

Does he get outside at all or have a dust bathing area to roll around in dirt?

Looks like some new growth coming in, could be a feather is not growing correctly or is getting impacted, this happens sometimes.

Help him preen the neck if he's not getting outside.

Could be partially a lack of Vitamin D (Sunshine) too.
