I am retired but I like to be outdoors as much as possible. I have had chickens for several years up until about 6-8 months ago when I was raided by a bear which killed and ate several of my chickens ,leaving me with 3 hens . I gave those to a friend & I am rebuilding my run-coop to hopefully be bearproof .I also love gardening & I have a spoiled jack--- . he is a minature white donkey. I am handicapped but hate being house bound. my chickens ,donkey and garden gives me reasons to be outdoors.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I have bears on my property too. I use hot wires around the coop and keep my flock enclosed in poultry netting charged with 10,000 volts. The bears have not been a problem for my chickens.

I'm sorry about your chickens, but welcome to Backyard Chickens. Hopefully you can take care of that bear problem. Also, I love the fact that you have a donkey. I think miniature donkeys are the greatest! The one we have is a grey jenny.

Omigosh! Now I feel like a real whiner complaining about wimpy little predators (mink, raccoon, possum, rat, owl) when you have predators that could damage you as well as killing your chickens!! I am sorry about your flock and wish you the best in your new venture.

Having poultry and livestock certainly does give a person a reason to be outside. I don't know where you are located, but I would have appreciated NOT having a reason to be outside for much of this winter.

However, even as I say that, I just brought home three Buckeye chicks yesterday, and I am thinking of ways to add more and better housing and runs this year.

Welcome to BYC where friendly folks will help you find solutions (and ways to add more chickens)!
