After doing a bit of research, I think Barred Plymouth Rock and Americaunas would be great to start with. I'd love to find one other breed if we can. We need chickens that are heat and cold tolerant as well as very human friendly. Our daughter and many of her first-grade friends will likely be over here playing with them a lot.

Oh! Those sound wonderful! Are they fairly easy to find at TSC or Orscheln's, usually? Right now to order from a hatchery online it looks like we'd need to order a minimum of ten. Unfortunately we won't have room for that many (yet). And we're too impatient to wait another month until things warm up and they can ship smaller groupings.

The last I knew (pre-pandemic), you could order as few as 3 chicks from Meyer.
