About to get some chicks....

After last year of dealing with a very annoying brooder made of cardboard boxes added together, I am now almost done with a new brooder that will be so much easier to deal with. With the boxes, it was crazy hard and traumatic to catch them. I believe the time making this new one will be worth it. I hopefully will get pics soon. :)
P.S. The feed store said that Chick Days is in mid-March!

I had eight chicks that hatched a week ago! I have moved them from the small box that they were in and put them in the spare bathroom tub! Instead of using pine shavings I have used puppy training potty pads! I got my heat lamp hanging from the shower curtain rod and that works great! I will be having two gosling hatching in a couple more days AND I want to order some Silver Laced Wayndottes. Can't wait! Soon in a couple of weeks we will be moving the chicks out to the brooder that is equipped with heat lamps, pine shavings and insulation.

Well, some bad news for us. One of our NH pullets died last night, the other NH, and the 6 others are still ok. Might have been a victim of pasty butt, I thought I was on top of it.

Now, to get a replacement, I hope TSC will sell us a single. They have this 6 minimum thing, but I think I'll protest as loud as a baby chick if they say no to a single. We bought 4 pullets, and 4 straight run. I do want at least 4 laying hens!

I have gotten some really great ideas from this post. I was going to use paper towels the first few days as I have done in the past. With a possible 24 chicks hatching next weekend, when I saw that someone had used puppy training pads I thought that is the ticket! Thanks!!! I was also going to put the new babies right out into a coop but have since rethought that and will put them into a smaller brooder where I can cover most of the top at night to keep the heat in as it has been pretty cold here at night. It has been 6 months since I have had babies, and I guess I forgot how fragile they really are. Thanks for the great ideas and reminders.

For me, BYC is a place to learn and help others. I have learned much and have much more to learn. Hopefully, I can occassionally share my experiences to assist others from time to time. I can only speak for myself, but when I offer unsolicited advice, it is to keep someone from making a mistake that could unintentionally hurt or kill their beloved pets. It is a horrible feeling to lose a chicken, and worse to lose a chick. IMHO

Well, I gave in to temptation today and bought some chicks. I need to make sure the brooder is working before my eggs hatch, right?????

I bought 3 red Sex Link pullets, 3 Gold-Laced Wyandotte pullets, and 3 that look to be either Buff Orpingtons or White Leghorns. I am so excited! They are adorable

This post gave me a good laugh to start my day! I love it! We all come up with GREAT reasons to add more chickens! Chicken math at it's finest!

I believe the OP is looking to stir things up. Check a thread begun by them titled "Confinement"
How do you find this? I looked at their profile and did not see anything. If they are starting threads just to get people all upset and stir up things between members. Administrators should probably be notified so they can check into it.

Thank You, I found it. Not sure what to think. I think I am going to keep out of it. OP can do whatever she chooses.

I had the same problem and bought 4 new chicks 2 americaunas 1 amber sexlink and 1 rhode island red. The temptation is just so hard not to buy just a few I already have 6 hens so I think I will have to settle for the 4 I bought for a while. Hopefully I can stay away from belmont feed and seed until all the spring chicks are gone.
