About to get some chicks....

Ha Ha Ha! Iam laughing at my own inexperience last year when we purchased our first chicks. They will grow so fast it will make your head spin. One day I went out to the garage to check on them and the little buggers were all lined up on the edge of a 2ft. high brooding box I had made. Yup! They can hop and fly too after a few weeks! Be prepared for some fun as well as getting educated very quickly.

They have the big gray tubs that are high and very long at Walmart-they can stay in this size of a plastic tub for at least 3mths before they are tooooo tall for it..you use the lid that comes with it for the top cover if needed 1/2 or 1/3 of the way covered with light bulb metal shade lamp clamped on at one end. Ours are in the garage and light bulbs work just fine 75 watt.. if newly hatched we use the heat lamp but you must have room for the babies to get away from the heat because the heat lamp WILL get too hot quickly.

Well, I gave in to temptation today and bought some chicks. I need to make sure the brooder is working before my eggs hatch, right?????

I bought 3 red Sex Link pullets, 3 Gold-Laced Wyandotte pullets, and 3 that look to be either Buff Orpingtons or White Leghorns. I am so excited! They are adorable

I am still waiting for mine to be delivered 4/26...on top of that I am setting eggs to hatch at around the same time. I have never done a hatch before and am setting 16 eggs. I hope for a good rate but I am already getting 30 chicks! I am so excited about them and will have them divided up between three brooders.

Re unsolicited advice: Remember in It's a Wonderful Liffe when George Bailey didn't deliver the capsules because he knew Mr. Gower had mistakenly put poison in them??? It's the same sort of thing. If a person new to chick raising says they aren't going to provide a heat source for 3 day old chicks, all the George Baileys that read that post are going to try to stop those chicks from freezing by giving advice.

Morning all. Isn't it exciting all this chick news. I just posted pics of the 4 that survived the shipment from Ideal.it was quite a tragic ordeal. They are on the Southern Ny Dutchess county thread.
They grow so fast and each have such different personalities.most of them are just funny little clowns.
Good luck with all your new fuzzy butts everyone

^^^Good morning to you too. We bought 8 chicks last night at TSC, 2 white leghorns and 2 sliverlaced wyandottes (those 4 straght run, oh no I hope they are not roosters!), and 4 amber links. We are very excited!!!!
