Abscess on foot. **pic** UPDATE

Okay it is done.....On the really swollen foot I got out a think that looked like a real hard disc. After I soaked it again it was nice and white under that. The one that was not very swollen I was not able to get anything solid. So I soaked them both again and put med on them and wrapped them with PINK petwrap. She is so cool. She went and gave me an egg..... Now she is walking around. Everyone is wanting cool shoes like her's. When it is time to go to roost I will put her in with the young birds with a roost only 1 to 2 feet high.

I am going to soak her feet again and check the feet for more yuck....
Maybe she will get better soon....It is sooooooooo HOT is Mississippi.
Thank you to all who shared. Man this site sure makes problems not so bad....

Swelling has hit a plateau. Had DH inspect and he pushed a plug out the top between her toes.

The pad is kind of firm. I'm sure there is another plug in there. She is normal in everyway and still laying for me. Will check it again tomorrow.

I was just thinking when our horses have an abscess I use something called ichthymol salve to draw out the abscess - I wonder if this would work on bumble foot? We soak in Epsom and povidine-iodine first and then apply the salve; gauze pad and then vet wrap. Usually within 3-5 days the infection has burst.

It is great stuff for drawing....

Update on Snow (from post 55,57 and 61)
She is doing much much better. I took her socks off (my son call the vet wrap that) and they are close to perfect. So I let her go with them off. Later in the day I checked her feet again and they are looking great. We also put boards up on her high roost spots so she can not get up that high anymore. Maybe this will keep it from happening again.
Thank you all again for helping us again through another 911 event at our house.
Ya'll are GREAT.

just wanted to thank you experts for your candid advice on this topic. Noticed a large swelling 2 days ago on one hen's foot - had to be bumblefoot from what I read here (you guys are great) - I did manage to assemble the tools and chemicals, wrapped the hen in a large dishtowel like a feathered burrito, and eventually extracted two (2!!) nasty looking cysts or something - packed the foot with sugar + iodine paste, wrapped securely, kept her in garage in a cage w/food, water, treats - I am sincerely hoping that I did less injury slicing into her than that nasty infection was causing. She seems fit enough to peck at me when I reach in the cage - still mad I suppose. She did lay an egg after I put her in the cage yesterday - eating, drinking water, pecking at fresh lettuce - fingers crossed. Thanks again for your willingness to share (especially the yucky photos)!

ws13,
welcome to the coop! I myself is still having a time with my hen's foot. Everytime I pull off the 'boot' the scab is stuck to the gauze pad and when taking it off the plug comes off with it. It does get smaller and smaller, but sheeze

it has been going on for quite a while now. I change the pad every 3 days. maybe I should do it more often?

I wsh you luck with your treatments and again

If a plug is coming out every time you remove the scab then you didn't get all of the plug out the first time. I would go back in and remove as much of that plug as I could.
