Absolute Newbie

Welcome to Backyard Chickens! We are glad you joined the flock!:welcome BYC is a helpful site providing all the information you need to know about poultry! There is always space for more members on the BYC roost!:highfive: There are a lot of docile brown egg layers but as far as other colored egg layers, none of them are too friendly. White leghorns are skittish and flighty and I have owned 10 Easter eggers and none of them are friendly either. Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!

Hello, and welcome to BYC! Good luck in figuring out what will be best for you! You said that your grandson is only 5 and is interested in maybe showing in 4H. May I suggest that you get some sort of smaller bantam breed for that, as it will be easier for a smaller child to handle?

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Check out the breed pages. I would second the recommendation to purchase day old chicks from a hatchery. I wanted a very colorful flock, colorful eggs, cold tolerant, friendly chickens. I purchased 8 different breeds from Meyer Hatchery in Ohio.
How does mail-order chicks work? What is the survivability of the babies during shipping?

We ordered from mypetchicken.com and had a very good experience. Their website is helpful and full of information that might help answer some of your questions.

One tip - make sure the chicken coop is completed before you get the chicks. They grow fast.
