I've mail ordered chicks from Murray McMurray before and had good luck with them getting to me just fine. I think a lot has to do with how conscientious the USPS is with delivering them promptly.

I've used a variety of hatcheries and had good luck with them all. If you do lose birds in transit or within I think up to three days after they arrive, take a picture and call the hatchery. They'll generally either give you a credit or replace the birds.
 
Update: The girls now 9 weeks old in and the girls are now outside full time w/o heat and seem to be doing really well. They are quite the characters and my grandson loves them very much, the chicks are skeptical, but mostly take it in stride...
