Acidified Copper Sulfate safe for chickens?

It's a very toxic chemical, but when mixed to the proper proportions, it's safe for chickens. It's a better preventative for treating large flocks, though, than for treating a single hen with sour crop.

Miconazole, a women's vaginal yeast treatment is a far better, cheaper, and easier med to use for treating a single sour crop case. It can be found at any pharmacy where women's hygiene products are sold.

I cover treatment in my article. https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/how-to-treat-sour-crop-and-impacted-crop-and-how-to-kn

Thank you! Great article. I was referred to it when I posted about my sick hen (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/lethargic-malnourished-hunched-in-corner.1318812/page-2) but if you think the first line would be a yeast med I can do that. I have nystatin cream, I will start there. 1 ml 3xday? Her crop was full this AM. She looks like crap and didn't come out of the coop. Last night I tried flushing crop with diluted epsom salt then gave a few bites of coconut oil and docusate. It's still not moving...gonna isolate her today as well.

I was also thinking of treating for cocci since I don't know what caused this. I have in my cart the Corid med, is that appropriate?

Can't hurt to treat for coccidiosis if you suspect it. Sour crop is often a symptom of another underlying illness attacking the body's defenses.

That looks like a vitamin supplement that just happens contains copper sulfate, hence trace minerals. I think the vet meant you need ~90% acidified copper sulfate which contains 10% citric acid.

I've never used it but I think the dose is 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water. 1 tsp of "acidified copper sulfate" weighs ~6.3 grams. That means each gallon of water would contain 1.42 grams (6.3 x 0.90 x 0.25) of copper sulfate.

If you were to put enough of that product in the water to equal 1,420 mg of copper sulfate, which would be 947 ml, then there would probably be a vitamin overdose so you don't want to use that product.

This is the product the vet was referring to:
