Ack! My husband is getting transferred to Alabama, now what?

Another option is to look for an old mobile home on land and buy it. Usually, they are quite cheap and the seller will often carry the mortgage because the banks won't finance them.

Real estate agents will have very few listings for rentals and rental agencies often give bad service and are not willing to allow exceptions, so they refuse animals automatically.

You will do better to start calling ads in Craigslist and make a bunch of appointments and go up there for a weekend and look at houses. Most likely, the tax assessor has information on-line and you can look up the address to verify that the person trying to rent you the house actually owns it.

If you still haven't found anything, you could always take your stuff and put it in storage, put the dogs into a boarding kennel, and stay in temporary housing while you find something.

When you are out looking, take all the information that a landlord will want. All your information about contact numbers for references and contact numbers for verifying current income. You want to be able to fill out applications right on the spot and have all the complete information.

Good luck.

Thanks Featherfinder. I really appreciate the offer.

Oregonblues, if I could talk my husband into any of those options I would try.

Again, thanks everyone for the well wishes and advice. We are hoping to be able to get up there beforehand if not maybe stay in a hotel until we find something. Either way, I'll have to sell the birds.

I would watch them for a while if needed. But I dont think my mom would like that. I will ask if you like though :D

I'm sorry you have to sell the birds, but please do stay on BYC! :hugs

DG you are so sweet to offer to watch the birds, she is down here in FL though and you are in TN.

Jdy, does your run and housing come apart fairly easy? Like can it be taken down, trailered and put back together and be structurally sound again? Maybe it is sized properly to be lifted and hauled on a trailer? If so and you want time to find a spot to live and have the birds with you we can set them up here for you until you are settled in.

We have a pasture not occupied right now, and plenty of room to set up a dedicated space with them and their housing. We have PM'd before about the birds, so feel free to shoot us a new message.

Yes, but near AL....... Kinda :lau makes me sad that she has to get rid of all her birds. I would die!

My suggestion would be to contact the local farm bureau and/or co-op there and the newspapers local to the surrounding rural areas and see what they advertise as available to rent. Our farm bureau here has a pretty good weekly newspaper and you might be surprised at how they could help you, especially if you tell them the situation. It is in their best interest as well to help out the rural folks.

Thanks again for all of the suggestions/offers. I have basically resigned myself to selling.

You may get some interested people on the Alabama Thread in the Social Forum. Huntsville is about 4 hours from me, but I would definitely have been interested if I wasn't already trying to downsize some myself.
