I currently have 2 heavy breed hens (a black sex link and an americauna) they will be 1 yr old this spring. My daughter has fallen in love with silky bantams and wants to have one or two in the mix we add to our flock this spring. I am fine with the idea of bantams but am unsure how they will fare in a flock of otherwise heavy breed hens, 2 silkies would bring the total to hopefully 6 hens. I have to build a coop this spring to replace an older dilapidated coop anyway so maybe some specifications could be made to help them escape if necessary? We are in town and let them free range when we are outside so I am also concerned about flying? My heavies think they can fly but really they are just very good jumpers. My neighbors have pitbulls and though they are sweet with people I have seen them looking at me hens as though they were already on a plate for their dinner. Any attempts to escape our fenced yard will end badly. Any suggestions/experiences are appreciated.
