My hens are 3 years old. It's probably time to add some younger ones. Don't hens quit laying around the 5th year?

How do you all go about adding new hens or little chickens to your group without trouble?

I have been off this site for a good while. I was working and now am off for a few months so want to catch up.

Thanks,

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! There is a nice article in the Learning Center on adding birds to your flock https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/896466/adding-new-chickens-to-the-coop it is generally best to wait until they are about the same size and then do it gradually though wire so they can see and interact with each other but not touch, ie if you can divide your coop or keep the younger ones in a cage inside the coop.
The general rule of thumb seems to be that a hen will lay about half at age five as she did in her prime. article has a general chart http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps029

Gonna follow this. I have some 9 and 12 week olds and just brought home 1,3,and 4 week olds last weekend!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Kelsie X2 Keep them separated by wire, but within the flock at all times for several weeks. This is the preferred method and usually goes fairly well.

Good luck with your new flock and welcome to ours!
