My coop is 4' square, we have one rooster, and two hens, one is a bantam, the other standard sized. We allow free ranging daily, the coop is open 7AM until dark. This coop is cleaned daily.(we clean out the poop, replace nasty straw. A $5. bale of straw lasts one month. I'm using those plastic milk crates for nesting boxes. I plan on getting one more hen soon.

MY QUESTION: will it be acceptable to add on nesting boxes to an existing coop? How high from the floor should we cut the opening?

In one pen of 33 layers I have a 10 hole nest box that is only 12" off the ground. They basically use the same 3-5 nests. In the other pen of 13 layers I have a community nest box that is 40" off the ground with a 3 step ladder leading up to it. So obviously they all use the one nest box (it is 2' x 4') I don't think it matters how high it is off the ground. Mine tend to use the lower boxes I think just to make me bend down more to get the eggs!
