hello i have a 4x4 coop and its great and really roomy and i also have a 12x15 run added on to the coop and they seem to love the outside more then the inside and i had 6 chickens 5 hens and 1 rooster so i got 7 more hens for FREE are they over crowded?

The rule of thumb seems to be 4 square feet of space per bird in the coop and 10 square feet of space per bird in the run. These number can vary depending on how much time the chickens spend in the coop and the temperature extremes where you live.

I have a smaller coop (5' x 3' bottom and 3' x 3' top level) and 4 hens. The coop manufacturer says 3-4 hens can live in the coop and 5-6 can use it as a place to roost/nest with additional run space. The 5 x 3 coop seems crowded with 4 hens so I added on another 5 feet at the bottom level to make it 10 x 3. Even then I rarely keep them confined to that space and usually let the hens have the run of the yard. It gets over 100 here in the summer so having adequate room and good ventilation are important.
